Advice Please - Major Service
« on: August 20, 2014, 11:08:40 am »
So I checked my service history and it looks like I'm due the big one in a months time so I'm just gathering info in advance.

I require the following:

Oil & Filter
Air Filter
Pollen Filter
Fuel Filter
Spark Plugs
Brake Fluid

Coolant Change - Already purchased G13 coolant so will be doing myself
Discs/Pads are fine
DV I'm changing this weekend

I have priced all of these parts and it came to around €150 along with I imagine 2 days of my time to DIY.

I then contacted VW and they have quoted €360. I suppose that's not really an astronomical amount for labour.

To be completely honest I want to do this work myself but I'm sure it will affect resale value with the full VW service history.

What I'd like to know is:
  • Have I missed anything in my servicing?
  • Should I DIY or get VW to do it?
After seeing a few scary threads on here with poor service by VW I have clearly stated I don't want the wash/vacuum or my wheels removed and I'll be taking before photos for peace of mind! This may seem excessive but I purchase my parts from the same VW and you can see the workshop from the counter. I was watching as one of the lads dropped an alloy face forward onto the ground, if this was my alloy he would also meet the same fate!

To be honest with you, after a certain amount of time and milage, full service history makes little difference to the resale value of your car. To most enthusiasts, someone who services their car themselves carefully, using decent parts and doing it by the book is more appealing and shows a greater level of car than someone who just chucks it into a main dealer who don't give a damn about servicing the car, just in and out as quick as possible.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

+1.

I used to be in the 'oh got to have 'FVWSH' but after experiencing two years with the tw@tters and a realisation that i'll probably keep the car until its run into the ground there is little point putting myself through the ball ache of having to deal with the morons just for the 'prestige' of the stamp.
