Oil leak... pic inside :(
« on: September 17, 2014, 08:46:18 pm »
Was giving the car a check over this evening for my MOT on Saturday & noticed a bit of oil on the under tray.

Whipped it off to see this.

Just in from the screws that hold the under tray on the n/s.

I did some searching before posting & it seems to be the inter cooler pipe?

Can anyone confirm or advise what could be leaking? No patches on the drive but would rather get it sorted.

It does use some oil but I thought the mk5 GTI did use a bit? I didn't think it was overly excessive. 1tr per 2/3 mths.

Cheers.

Very common leak - mine does it. You can buy a new washer for pennies at a dealer  :happy2:

Mine had the same thing but the pipe looked like it was seated OK. Is this oil from vaporised oil that is re-entered into the intake system via the PCV? Can not work out how oil ends up in the inter cooler intake?!

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Thanks for the replies.

Phew that's a relief, haven't a clue how it gets there  , will have to get it sorted though castrol edge isn't cheap.

Can that just be unclipped & seal replaced on the drive?

I'd check your intercooler make sure it's not filled up with oil that's a lot of oil to come out a intercooler pipe there should only be a small amount

You need to replace the hose, C clip and o ring seal (on both ends).
It's approx £65 from VW.

Or you can cut the bayonet fitting off the pipe, and buy an adaptor from somewhere like Creation Motorsport on eBay for £20 delivered and save yourself a fair few quid, just needs a jubilee or T-bolt clamp, and the o-ring and c-clip which are a couple of quid tops on their own  :happy2:

That joint is about to blow! I bet the lugs are worn on the hose, as above get a new hose and seals or adaptor. I went the adapter route on eBay search boost bayonet

In definite need of proper fitting again...you are losing boost. The oil is normal but not if it appears to be an excessive amount. It should only lightly coat things if at all. Also, if oil is excessive there, you may have a cracked EVAP portal in the valve cover allowing oil to be sucked into the EVAP line that goes into the turbo inlet...but you will notice excessive oil usage and smoky exhaust at high revs and under boost. See my post if this may be the case:

I wouldn't know how to start & butcher bits, I'll order the replacement parts.

Intercooler hose? X2
Intercooler c clip x2
O ring seals x 2

Cheers for the input, appreciated.

Is this likely to be an MOT failure? I need to reschedule before 12 tomorrow to avoid losing out on the fee.
