2 New WINTER tyres, anyone tried these
« on: September 29, 2014, 01:09:16 pm »
My dusty winter rims are stacked away neatly in the garage but the front two are butchered (left them on too long with too higher temps)., the rear two have about 6mm left.

So, I'm in need of a new front pair.  I've been using Goodyear Ultragrip Performance 2, which were great in the snow.
But I can't get them cheaply so been looking at:  Nokian WR A3's which seem to have great reviews and not excessively priced.

Just wondering if anyone else has tried them or what other winter boots people have.

I have a full set of Nokian WR D3 as winters for my Edition 30 and I couldn't be more impressed by them. Haven't used the A3 but if they're up there with them I'd give it a go. Or just spend a smidge more and get the D3s's!

Cheers mate, sadly my winters are my old original Monzas 225/40/18 :rolleye: so both expensive and wide.  They're still galaxies apart from the Summers on Snow though.

The D3 don't come in 18's as far as I can see, so I've bought some of the A3's - at least it makes the Summers last longer. :happy2:

I found it was cheaper and a bit better for winter to downgrade to 17's, so I got some cheap Audi wheels and got the D3s in 17s!

They should be good though mate if my experience with Nokian is anything to go by.

Nokians are good.  Used those and Conti winter rubber before with no issues.   Personally I'd run 4, or use the winters on the back if you only want to run 2.   Always have the most grip at the back to avoid an unexpected over-steer scares.

Get yourself a set of scabby 17s for winter use.  You don't want to slide into a kerb with decent 18s.

I do run x4 matey.  They were the old whitewormed Monzas that I refurbed silver, but then plastidipped for the hell of it:

The 17 inch tyres don't seem a lot cheaper, perhaps £15 a tyre (I paid ~£100 each for the Nokians and Goodyears), not sure I can be bothered swapping to 17's now... but I'd definitely recommend it for others who don't have the wheels already.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure how the plastidip is going to stand up to the tyre machine. :rolleye:

Im currently running Hankook icebear W300 for last two winters and so far have seemed ok, not really had a great deal of snow to test them though  :happy2:

I did end buying a set of 18" monza's to run as winter wheels, when i went to get them refurbed, i was told i can re-do the original finish if you want, shiny monza's with minor white worm again for winters, so much easier to clean than pescara on the ED30.  :signLOL:

I full a set a full set of WR A3's. Been really good up to now. Still spin/slide if you make them but I went out 2 yrs ago to see if I could get stuck and couldn't. There were only farm vehicles and Land Rover's knocking about.
