RNS510
« on: September 29, 2014, 04:23:01 pm »
I bought an Edition 30 recently and the previous owner already fitted an RNS510 to it.   There was nothing handed over in the history.  No code. No manual. No information what so ever.

I keep reading about battery drain problems in 100s of threads but it's hard to summarise it if you are new to both the car and the radio, so, if someone could be so kind as to answer the following, I'd appreciate it:-

How do I know if I have the problem?  How long does it take to flatten the battery? Overnight? 1 day? 2 days? 3 days?

What is normal behaviour for an RNS510?  Should it boot up with the VW logo every time you switch it on, or should it go back to where you left it?

Is it normal for the fans to stay on after you turn it off?

What exactly is it about the radio that flattens the battery?  The fans not turning off?

How do I find out what version of RNS510 I have?

What was the original radio fitted to an Edition 30?  I might just bin the RNS510 and refit the original radio instead of messing about with CAN gateways and / or jumper leads.

Thanks all.

What reg is your ed30? I dont know how long it would tale to go flat but would guess at a few days. Have you had a problem?

It goes back to where you left it. If its on when you turn the ignition off, it turns back on when you start it up again.

Yes its normal for the fans to stay on.

No idea what flattens the battery

To find out which you have you need to physically look at the top of the unit or scan it with vcds. Does it have a star in the top corner? If it does its a C/D or newer, if if doesnt its a A/B/ early C.

I wouldnt get rid of it, you would be mad doing it. The standard stereo is a rcd300 and its pants

Cheers guys.  Sorry for posting in the wrong area.  Newbie mistakes  :ashamed:  A mod can feel free to move it

It's a 2007 model year.  I'll check with VCDS which model it is.  Cheers.

It hasn't gone flat on me yet.  I've left the car 2 days and it started up no problem.

I can turn it off / on with the key out of the ignition.  Is that normal?

If I did the fuse box jumper workaround, would I have to reset all the tone settings etc every time?

Just leave it and see what happens. Chances are the guy who fitted it sorted it for battery drain, otherwise it would be a nightmare to live with.
Sarcasm for free. Anything after that can only be considered as a bonus.

Just because you think you know something, doesn't make you an expert if you've just read it on the internet, y'know.

Cheers guys.  I'll see how it works out then, maybe I'm fretting over nothing.  Only had the car a few weeks and I'm big on preventative maintenance.  Borderline OCD I think!

Coming from a MK4, I have to say, the RNS and 3 way speaker system sounds very good indeed!

I got impatient and installed my RNS510 before updating the can-gateway. 2 days flat as a pancake.
