I've never run winters on any vehicles and never had any problems and got places a lot of people can't.

As much as winter tyres will improve grip etc, it won't help if the person behind the wheel doesn't know how to drive in the snow.

The only thing against winter tyres is that other people who don't use them will either block the road in front of me because they're unable to go, or run into my back end because they're unable to stop.
Sarcasm for free. Anything after that can only be considered as a bonus.

Just because you think you know something, doesn't make you an expert if you've just read it on the internet, y'know.

Definitely, happens every winter (the former part at least)

If you live in the sticks, like myself, they are a life (and car) saver. People who say we don't need them in this country must not drive on snowy/icy untreated country roads. Had them on the fiesta and will look into them for the golf. What size steels fit over the calipers? 16"?

last year I used proper winter tyres  on the golf for the first time, ,and I got a shock how good they are,  and it's piece of mind now  knowing for a couple of hundred quid I've made the effort, seems like a no brainer to me, plus for the price it's cheaper than my excess if I got it all wrong.

If you have to travel about in the winter months and the snow then change your tyres

Defo. makes driving much more of a pleasure in the crappy cold weather, once you've got your first set, it does offset the summer tyre wear so they last much longer too.

I can understand why people don't do it, it's an additional expense, but the difference is night and day on snow/ice - it's not just about being stuck, safety is a BIG plus to using them.

I've got a spare set of wheels with Nokian WR-D3 winters on. Used them for the first time last year and it was like night and day difference between these and my ContiSportContact 2's on my Pescaras.

I live just off Ilkley Moor and have to use a lot of the Moor roads and when they're snowy its a proper pain in the arse! With the Nokians never had a problem! Plus even just when it was cold and wet the grip levels were 100 times better than the summer tyres.

I usually buy a diesel beater for the winter, as the weather where I live gets pretty hectic.

Park the nice car up, keeps the miles off it, maintenance need, tax, fuel costs etc down. Removes the chances of it being crashed in snow / ice too.

Diesel beater is then sold in Spring and the nice car comes out again.

Also means I can work on the nice car while it's tucked away in the garage with no pressure to have it ready for the drive to work in the morning. Any jobs can be done thoroughly and take all the time they need.
