RNS510 update -which one to go for?
« on: October 14, 2014, 09:12:34 am »
Hi, I have recently purchased my 2009 Golf Mk5 with an RNS510. I have tried various ways which I found on the internet to get to the hidden menu to find out what version I am running, but no luck. So I don't know what Firmware I currently have and I assume my maps are V3 as I have the original discs which tell me.

I would like to upgrade the lot. Can I go straight to the latest firmware which I can find , i.e. 5238 and the latest maps, i.e. V11? Anything to watch out for or is it as straight forward as burning the disc and put them in to the RNS510? Do I need this VCDS equipment, which I don't have and I don't have access to?

Any help, please?

Need to know what part number your unit is really before making any decision as to what firmware etc. you can safely run to. Pull the unit and take a look at the part number on the sticker on the top is the only really straight forward way to tell.
Sarcasm for free. Anything after that can only be considered as a bonus.

Just because you think you know something, doesn't make you an expert if you've just read it on the internet, y'know.

I could not wait ... too excited. I updated from whatever I had to 3810 and later to 5328. All still working. The hidden menu is now accessible via the setup button pressed for a while.
I now need to find the right maps. The download link I find on one website is a right pain waiting for all the files. Not sure however what to do once I have downloaded them all. Do I just unzip them and stick them randomly on a DVD?

The zip file when decompressed will give you an iso file that you can burn to a dual layer DVD. It's recommended to use DVD+R DL from a good brand like Verbatim.

Josi's modified version of the 5238 firmware is compatible will all RNS-510 versions. If you used that one, you're fine. It's the one I have in mine as well.

Cheers

The firmware I have already updated and the FW 5238 which i got worked fine for me.
The files for the maps are the problem. I understand there are about 28 files to download, which takes time and I don't know how to put them back together in the to burn them an a DVD.

I use a free program to decompress/compress files called 7z. You just open the first file, since they should be numbered, and decompress those 28 files in one big file that should be *.iso, which is a DVD image. You burn the DVD image to a DVD+R DL. If done right, you just need to put the DVD in your RNS-510 and after a while it'll ask you if you wish to copy the maps from the DVD to the hard drive inside.

I might need an IT lesson here from you if you don't mind. I have the 7Z software. When open it up I get a list of files, which are in the directory as selected in the above bar. When I see all 28 files in there (assuming this is what I have to do) then what? I have ADD, EXTRACT, TEST, COPY, MOVE, DELETE and INFO. Any help would be great, thanks

If you double click the 1st file of the 28, you should see the iso file. Then drag that file to a folder of the File Explorer. After that burn the file to a DVD Dual-Layer.

The program will automatically extract the file to the folder you selected.

Thanks, I will try as soon as I have the files. At the moment I only have 5 out of 28. Might be just after Christmas when I have finished.

for Firmware update you find everything you need here:

http://www.my-gti.com/

You pick the firmware you want, unzip it and burn it on the DVD, pop it in the CD slot and than you start doubting yourself, but be brave to press the 'yes, I agree and take responsibility' acknowledgement twice. Than your pulse starts to raise and you see the progress screen. Some percent progress stages take ages and you think it is all over. Sometimes the screen goes black and sometimes it gets all quiet as if it has died. But don't intervene. In my case it came back and completed the process. It takes about an hour, or just under. When all is done you feel epic.

For the Map update I went here:

http://gpsunderground.com/forum/volkswagen-seat-skoda/23538-rns-510-v10-west-europe-cd_8048-a.html

There is a link on it, which takes you to an upload page with 28 files on it. I am too greedy to pay the extra money for easier download, so I do it the hard way. One file downloads in about one hour and you can only download one file every 180min. This is painfully long. When I have done all this I will try to burn the files to a DVD as I have learnt form Shoduchi above.
I keep my fingers crossed

I know have all the 28 files. All extracted and burnt to the DVD. The file structure on the DVD looks like this:
- config
- db
- dbal
- edb
- speech
- telemat
- tpd
cdrom.toc
dpinfo
files.cfg

The problem is now that the unit (RSNS510) says there is a disk/dvd error and does not accept the disk. Any ideas? Do I need to do anything else other than inserting the disk?
