Help needed! Audi a3 2.0 tdi 2010 start problems
« on: October 19, 2014, 01:02:29 am »
Hi guys , after some help.
My wife's car is a 2010 A3 140bhp TDI with 89,000 miles. Last weekend I noticed it started to make a noise from a pulley so the following Monday I took it to a local specialist who I have used for many years. On the way down, there was a funny noise for about 10 seconds just round the corner for the garage. Turned out the alternator clutch pulley failed and shredded the belt. Also apparently knocked timing out as when I tried to re start the car it would die straight after starting and the coil light was flashing.
Now even though Audi and the service manual suggest the timing belt to be changed at 133k miles, I decided to replace the timing belt, water pump tensioner etc.

Now since Wednesday morning (Tuesday evening received the car back) the car struggles to start when cold and when it does, it is really lumpy on idle for between 10-15 seconds. Also there is white smoke coming from the dpf to turbo joint. Again only for a few seconds. I've taken the car back to the mechanic and is re booked on Thursday for the day to ensure he has chance to start from stone cold ideally overnight from Wednesday.
I'm struggling to find info regarding this and can't understand how this may have anything to do with the work I've had done.
The car once warm runs brilliantly, actually better than before, a lot smoother and quieter
However these problems have only started since the work being undertaken.
Any ideas guys?
Thanks in advance,
Usman

Wonder if the timing is out slightly but you mention it's okay when the car is warm

My money is on the timing slightly out - it's not an uncommon problem.

This is what you need to read - poster Zeesafa checking it with VCDS to get the correct values

Thanks for the replies guys. I agree with you, and this is what I discussed with my mechanic a few days ago. He's going to re check it all over again. Would the standard or factory settings in VCDS change overtime, let's say for example if the mechanic has done all the physical work correctly and now needs tuning again in VCDS?

When the belt stretches the torsion value changes (+ or - 3 is inspec if I remembe correctly).

I have the exact same problem. Every garage I have taken it to has said the same thing yet can't get it right. Other garages have fobbed me off and replaced other parts that didn't need doing which has cost me a small fortune.

I'll be interested to see how you get on with this as mine has been doing this for going on 2 years!
How hard can it be?

@doylebros  thanks for the info. Last night I asked @reaper7881 to do a quick vcds scan for any stored faults. There were a couple which were cleared and today it seems better. However I will double check in the morning as today the mrs started the car and her exact words were "it seemed fine" lol

Update:

Car is still pretty much the same on a cold start, but I've noticed it settles a lot quicker now, around 5 seconds. It will be going back in to have timing adjusted.

Have you had any luck sorting this issue out?

Have you had any luck sorting this issue out?

Not sorted at the minute unfortunately, timing is correct, it's a suspected glow plug as there was a fault registered for misfire on cylinder 4. I'm seeing as it goes to see if gets any worse. Seems like that is the issue. I need to get another scan to see if the error has come back again. It didn't show after a further scan two days later.
When I start it and rev to about 1500 rpm all settles down and engine runs smooth so I think a set of glow plugs are on the cards next.

As it's the cr140 engine, the fuel pump needs timing correctly with the engine as it runs of the belt.  I would say that the timing for the fuel pump rather than the cam to crank timing is wrong.

Seen and fixed a few like that now.

I've had this problem with mine for ages now, been to loads of garages to be sorted and nothing has!

Had a new set of glow plugs and that didn't solve the problems at all, seven had a new wiring loom too!

@vRSAlex   Thanks for the info, I'm looking for some info on this, is this adjusted manually or via VCDS?

Also would it throw up an error on VCDS if there was an issue with the fuel pump timing?

If only you weren't miles away!

Just had mine in a garage who stripped the timing belt down and retired it to find the inlet cam out of time and the tensioner not fitted correctly causing the belt to become slack. Seems to start better will only know for sure in the morning, also pulls better now too.
