Wrong gear redline

Hi I have just brought my gti.   However whilst driving in 3rd gear at around 50mph/60mph I tried to change to 4th but I didnt clutch in properly due to my inexperience  I herd a clunk and I think the car went into netural. The rev meter then hit the red line and I quickly shifted back into 3rd. Would I have done any damage and if so what? I am going to get this checked at a garage.

dont think you have damaged it mate. Just dip your clutch all the way before changing gear,

I once went from 5th to 2nd, rather 4th in my old corrado at about 70mph coming off a dual carriageway. It was not fine.

I think these engines protect themselves from 'buzzing' , should be fine from what I've heard.

You've not went into the wrong gear, you've simply mis-shifted.. so you've not taken the revs past the rev limiter  if you'd done a 3rd>2nd instead of a 3rd>4th, it would be a different story!

You've not went into the wrong gear, you've simply mis-shifted.. so you've not taken the revs past the rev limiter  if you'd done a 3rd>2nd instead of a 3rd>4th, it would be a different story!

I've heard apparently once it revs too high it'll push itself into neutral to protect it from destroying itself. Still definitely not something I ever want to find out though.

The TTRS gearbox is a piece of sh1t

Done exactly the same plenty of times in my old GTI (it really wasn't liking me slamming it into gear lol!!) so don't worry, nothing bad will come of it.

A member a while ago was bashing up the 1/4. Went from 2nd back into 1st.... i dont think it was a happy TTRS.

Thanks for all your replies you guys are great!!! Thinking about it now I may have shifted into 2nd rather than 4th, however when I looked at the gearbox it was in neutral but it still went into the redline area and now Im scared of driving the car how it should be driven lol
