Hi...Potential MK5 Golf GTi purchase

im in exeter and its definitely more limited down here than it is in the north. Ive seen a few around the birmingham area but i just think i would hate to travel all that way to find its no good! it may come to that but I'm hoping for something a little nearer at first as I'm not really in any rush atm!

Just a quick question, do people generally recommend going for manual over dsg? Ive never driven an auto and automatically assumed i would want a manual but the dsg does look like fun? Is it more likely to go wrong especially now the car is 10 years old?

Mechatronics might go but on a manual the clutch might go so it's not a big risk buying a DSG over a manual, just make sure it's been serviced properly with a new filter and oil every 40k or 4/5 years.

There's a lot of nackers out there dude, if you can stretch to 6 grand you can pick something nice up, you wouldn't regret it...

I agree Jay. It seems that the difference between a 5k car to a 6k one is substantial so i think it will be worthwhile spending the extra bit. Ive found one with leather, dsg, 18" monzas, in steel grey with 113k on the clock that I really like for 6.5k so i think thats the type of model I will be looking for!

That sounds a bit steep to be honest. I managed a get one with 100k, FSH, 2 owners, manual & 17" monzas for under 4.5K. Really nice condition but it could do with being machine polished.

I got a mint 06 plate with 60k on it for 6grand' and that was 2 years ago! Yes he wanted more but 6 was all I had and it was simply 'take it or leave it'! You have to negotiate tough, as we all know money is hard to come by, but while you still have it in your hand you have the power...

Yep I knocked mine down from £8,000 to £7,200 simply because he made mistake of telling me he had a 7R due for delivery the following week so obviouy he had been made a poor px offer on his Gti, its certainly a buyers market on them as lots of people are going for newer models etc and being offered peanuts for px by the dealers
I recently enquired about new Golf R at Chester dealers and they came back with offer of just over 5k for my minty 57 plate fully loaded Gti obviously I laughed and decided to keep it
Its harsh on the seller but times are hard and you have to be brutal with the negotiating
