Lag/stutter/wheel spin in 2nd gear in the rain
« on: December 17, 2014, 02:47:58 pm »
Hi whilst I was driving in the rain and giving  the car a little welly in 2nd gear (I know its bad in the rain  :ashamed:) there seemed like there was a stutter or wheel spin at around 3k revs like it was shaking and then I put it into 3rd. It only happened once, what was it?

Errrrrr wheel spin due to nailing it in 2nd in rain and turbo/boost solenoid having a bit of a fit, even more so if car not fully up to temperature!

Even standard Gti light front wheels up in 2nd gear when wet

Wont cause damage unless you do it regularly, I had a similar thing once where the wheels only broke traction a bit and there was a nasty jumping/ banging sound and feel from the front end where they would momentarily grab and then lose traction, it was pretty horrible.

Its worse with the traction control on because the car cuts and reapplies the power, with the traction control off it can just spin freely for a second and then you can moderate it with your foot.

I had the same thing the other day and a light flashed up on the dash while it happened, I'm guessing something to do with traction control. It didn't worry me, as putting your foot down in the rain is of course, going to make you wheel spin  :signLOL:

sounds like your traction control kicked in and cut the power, supprised it has only happened once GTI struggles to put the power down especially in the rain

I've had that a few times recently - the yellow snakes appearing on the dash! I do try to moderate my driving style for wet/cold conditions but even  a slightly brisk turn out of a junction can cause it.
I'm using Goodyear Assy 2s - great tyres - but has anyone found that 'winter tyres' make a difference?
I was thinking about investing in a set for possible snow, but it maybe worth it for these conditions.
I know the tyre manufacturers and motoring writers bang on about them - but does anyone have real, practical experience?

Winter tyres make a real difference, below 7 degrees where normal tyres are hardening and have less grip the winter tyres are still soft and grippy. You can definitely feel the extra grip, and when it actually shows they're in another league, its not BS they really ate better.

I may now invest! Out of interest, which ones are you or have you used?

I got this twice today, once while I was pulling off up a very steep hill and the next while I was pulling out of a junction it felt really horrible as the ESP light was flashing on and off and the power dropped for a second. Is there any mods I can do to reduce wheel spin ? P.S I was taking it fairly easy both times. I wasn't giving it much gas.

Get stickier tires or give it even less gas when pulling away.

as mentioned above. anti lift kits will help prevent wheel spin. but even then its just a case of regulating throttle.   its fun in a DSG.. gearbox isnt sure exactly what to do

The car came with some brand new Hankook tyres but I felt like it would be a waste getting rid of them but I'm thinking on it now, yhh the DSG had no clue what to do, next time I'll just slip it into manual and hopefully I won't see the same issues. Lesson learnt
