oil level after 2000 miles
« on: January 03, 2015, 01:51:40 pm »
Hi, I got my car serviced around 2000 miles ago  and the dipstick reads just above halfway today, so I topped it up. Is this oil usage normal as I read its a litre every 600 miles.

thank you.

Did you check the oil level straight after it had its service? Its not unheard of for garages to not to fill the oil up fully when servicing, especially if its a main dealer.

The 2.0 litre TFSi engines are known to consume quite a bit of oil, it's just the way they're designed. Any turbo charged engine will consume oil in various amounts.

Mine began losing 1qt/1000 miles...we are discovering that the EVAP and PCV ducts in the valve cover are either cracking or the adhesive fails along the duct seams. This allows oil to enter and travel through the intake, combustion, and through the exhaust. But you should notice a good bit of smoke under full throttle if this is the case. A new valve cover is the fix if you suspect this due to smokey exhaust and your compression numbers look good.

Wouldn't replacing the gasket sort the issue, or is it the cover itself that fails?

Thanks for all your replies. Yeh I did check the oil after the service it was definitely topped up to the top. How many litres is the dip stick  top to bottom? My mechanic did say there is a leak somewhere so il get it checked next service :)

If this is what's going on for someone...it is the cover itself. For some orientation see page 9 of the document: http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/golfgoodies/mk5golfengine.pdf
The two ducts mentioned before are formed and stuck(←I am told...even though it appears to be molded) to the underside of the valve cover with adhesive. I thought it would be easiest to begin on the EVAP side so I did a DIY EVAP reroute (there is this so you do not need to trim the front clip as I did: http://www.performancebyie.com/evap-crossover-tube-relocation-kit-for-2-0t-fsi-with-integrated-engineering-valve-cover) and that cut down on the smokey exhaust as well as the oil loss. After doing this I had 3k miles to go before I changed the oil and it had lost less than 0.5qt over those 3k miles. So I believe that the PCV side may also have some damage and time will tell when I need a new v-cover. Just not decided on OE or billet just yet.

If the damage to the valve cover ducting is on the PCV side...you are going to need either a VTA catch-can or a new valve cover.

So if someone's planning on using a catch can anyway it'll bypass this job?

That is incorrect...a catch-can alone does not stop oil from seeping into either route and into the turbo and intake. Also, the catch-can has nothing to do with the EVAP route. The EVAP port is beside the PCV in front and connects directly into the v-cover apart from the PCV plate....note the 5/8" rubber plug in the final pic above. The EVAP flows through the v-cover separately from the PCV and exits beside the rear breather tube of the PCV duct at the rear.

There are two areas that can cause the loss of oil in the valve cover. Oil can seep into both the EVAP and PCV routes. So again, if there are no other causes of the loss of oil...you can be losing it through the EVAP route or the PCV route...or both. You can simply replace the v-cover and be done with it...or you can do the simpler of the two and do the EVAP reroute. If that fixes it...there is nothing wrong with the PCV route. But if the loss continues, perhaps at a slower rate then before doing the EVAP reroute, you have issues through both routes.

I decided to just do the EVAP reroute to see if this is where my issues were...and it was for the majority of oil loss. It costs less than $10usd for the bits to do the job. Until conditions worsen in the PCV route...I've bought myself some time to decide what to do next. It will likely be either the billet or OE valve cover. However, a billet valve cover requires a VTA catch-can and the EVAP reroute which I already have.

Just as well I have a second valve cover then! I shall heed your words and look at sorting this, along with a good clean of my inlet. Really great advice there and very greatful for the write up.
