Buyers guide for mk5 r32? Calling all r32 owners

Hello. i now own a golf mk5 gti dsg and i saw a nice r32 in a car store so now i'm asking you guys for buying tips what to look out for etc.
the car is in bluw colour, dsg, mfsw, xenons, and got 90.000miles on it.

what can i look for when buying this car? dsg service etc?

Pop over to R32oc mate, there's probably loads of these threads on there.

But
DSG service history
Haldex service history
Check for rattlling on idle
And all the usual stuff is a good start.

Make sure it's had the DSG & Haldex serviced at 40K & 80K miles along with all the regular servicing.  If it hasn't...well, you're potentially asking for trouble. DSG should be super smooth with no bangs, clicks, whines, hesitation etc. Listen for any whining coming from the rear as that could indicate an issue with the rear diff.

Make sure there is no squeaking when you start the engine as that could be starter motor or worse, the DMF on it's way out. Also listen for any metallic rattling when switching off the engine and also any noise that disappears when idling as you shift from P to N to D etc as that could also be a DMF issue.

When it's idling, lift the bonnet and listen to the right (passenger) side of the engine behind the oil cap. If there's a noise that sounds like beans rattling in a can then that is more than likely worn timing chain guides.

Also have a listen for any exhaust blowing from the front of the car under throttle as the flex pipes might be split. All the exhaust noise should come from the rear.

Have a good check of the brakes, especially rears as they're known to stick/bind.

Nice cars but they can be very expensive if things go wrong.

They've certainly got a character and they sound superb when given some beans. Quite linear power delivery and they just grip and go, wet or dry. Not the fastest things around but plenty quick enough when you need it. Certainly worth test driving one as you'll either wonder what all the fuss is about or fall in love and buy it instantly... :wink:

Got to be worth a look and test drive. Just check the things I mentioned above.  In addition, have a listen for any loud whining that makes it sound like it's supercharged as that could be a duff bearing in the transfer box. It'll do it in all gears and gets louder with speed if it's on it's way out.

I moved to a MK5 R32 this year, having already owned a edition 30 so I knew pretty much what to look out for. All I can say is test drive as many as you can, I test drove 4 and 3 were dogs! people buy them and underestimate the running costs so alot have 5+ owners, as the seem to get sold with in 6 months.
As someone already said make sure its got FSH and been looked after, since its a DSG spend along time test driving it and have a good listen under the bonnet while its running. check the front arches for rust to, can be sorted through vw though.
I brought mine in September, black with 75k, great cars  :happy2: but the car tax and mpg around town  :scared:

Chains are supposed to last the life of the engine but the guides start to wear prematurely and eventually become noisy. Pot luck as to what mileage they start to wear and the noise becomes noticeable.

MPG is actually pretty good unless it's round town, stop-start or you drive with your foot stuck to the floor. I've been getting around 28mpg with mixed driving, town, dual-carriage way. On a Motorway run you can get 30+ fairly easily.

Your Leon is a bit special so it'll be interesting to see what you think of the R32 after driving it.

I finally gave in to my lust for the vr6 noise and got one at the start of last year, with a years' VW used approved warranty.

The engine's great, so much torque even from 1000 rpm, you can comfortably sit in 5th at 30mph and the car never feels like it's labouring.

It's never used a drop of oil in all the time I've had it and I've averaged 28mpg in the past 6 or so months, expect 40-60 miles to a tenner of petrol  :happy2:

On that note however, it's a good job I had the warranty, as the rear diff decided to give up the ghost at 51k miles (replaced at a cost of £3500) probably due to previous harsh treatment and possibly incorrect oil change procedure (worryingly common mistake by VW workshops getting the Haldex oil and rear diff oil levels confused)

I also had the water pump replaced under warranty at 53k as it had begun to squeak on idle (bearings on way out).

Apart from that, I've loved it!

Another thing to check. Make sure that you can hear the fuel pump prime when you unlock and open the drivers door.

how often does the chain need to be changed if its a 2006 year r32? and the car company selling told me it have had 9 owners now  :sick:
