Cam belt
« on: November 21, 2009, 11:35:23 am »
When I start the car i can hear a belt noise, sounds like a 'tweeting' under the bonnet, only does it when the car is cold! I have heard that it may be the cam belt and that vw have replaced these under warranty? Has anybody heard this before, just thinking whether its worth risking leaving my car with them or getting it done myself  :scared:

Thanks

If your car is under warranty then the best thing you can do is take it in to the main dealer. If they agree to change the belt and the tensioner (which is probably where the fault lies) then it's a nice way of saving yourself £500 plus!
Engine belts often slip a bit and squeal when it's colder, especially in older cars. My sister's MX5 has done it for years, it's a good judge of how cold it is outside by the length of time it takes to stop squealing!

I would've thought it was your ribbed alternator belt that was squealing rather than your toothed cambelt, the only way they can slip is if the tensioner has failed or the belt teeth have been stripped.  If that was the case your car would run awfully or not at all.

My alternator belt tensioner is failing, if you open the bonnet with the engine on you can see it wobbling around on the left hand side of the bay.  If yours is doing the same I'd say that was the fault.
