chirping sound from the engine
« on: January 11, 2015, 12:52:53 am »
As above there is a squeaking/ chirping sound from my engine, it's mostly on cold starts but a few times I've heard it after long drives still. It sounds like it's coming from the left side of the engine where the cambelt is, I have also WD40'd the aux belt and it didn't help.

I've done some research and it's probably a belt possibly cambelt but it was replaced 24k 27months ago so should be fine? Also I haven't heard of a cam belt still squeaking when warm?

Any suggestions welcome, thanks.

One of the auxiliary belt pulleys perhaps? Had a similar issue on mine and that's what it turned out to be.

Had the same noise and it was the auxiliary belt

On the 2.0 TFSi, it's normally the cambelt tensioner that squeals when cold.

Its weird that it starts again though after a long drive? It was quite loud last night after nearly 2 hours of driving.

If your cambelt tensioner wasn't replaced, this will be your problem.

Bearings can get very noisey, you are correct  :happy2:

I've just looked back through the service book and the toothed belt and toothed belt tensioning roller were changed at 34k in sep 2006 and the toothed belt tensioning roller + water pump were changed in Aug 2012.

Now I hope that they just didn't tick toothed belt on the most recent one otherwise the belt is 8+ years old but they would be insane to not change it when already in there?

I don't want to replace it for no reason but obviously don't want a dead engine.... My friend removed the aux belt today and it was still squeaking although much quieter.

If its a cambelt tensioner what sort of risk am I taking by not replacing immediately? If I was to leave it 2 months/ 1500miles is that a risk or is it most likely just an annoying noise that shouldn't cause any real issues? Thanks.

I'll be just an annoying noise. It won't be a sign of imminent failure
