Multiple variations of rear calipers?
« on: January 14, 2015, 10:33:35 am »
Hello,

So my drivers side rear caliper is seizing, and getting more seized everyday. Seen you can get a rear caliper on ebay but they aren't far off dealer prices locally. Also seen some mk6 caliper and discs all round online for sale for good enough value, do mk6 fit fine to a mk5? And do 3door mk5 calipers the same as the mk5 calipers? Cheers

And also when I rang some breaker yards, they've been telling me there's 2 or 3 different types of calipers that can be back there?

For the different types of caliper.. they are probably referring to the size of them I think, can't remember the exact sizes but you can find that easily on Google. Think it's 256 and 288 or something like that?

And yes the MK6 calipers will fit MK5 as quite a few people upgrade standard GTI brakes to the MK6 R brakes which are the same as the the R32 brakes but just a different colour, bigger and better than the standard brakes.

Would you not think of upgrading your standard brakes to the MK6 R or R32 rears and possibly fronts if you have the spare mullah in the pocket.. whilst your on with getting one of them done? Perfect timing to make the upgrade I would say :happy2:

Ive just purchased and fitted s genuine drivers rear caliper off ebay £79 delivered, local dealership wanted nearly double that and local motor factors wanted £70 for a non painted cheap copy
When ordering from the chap on ebay just quote your registration on checkout page and he ensures correct item is sent

Anyway to find out if it's 256 or 288mm needed? Bit of value in second hand pieces too! There's a whole set of standard mk5 gti calipers for 125 pounds shipped, no paint flaking . Worth spending £80 on a new caliper or £125 for a set of 4 and sell the others?
