Poss new owner, few questions
« on: February 19, 2015, 09:25:43 pm »
Hi everyone, I'm looking for a mk 5gti (just put my St up for sale) and have a few questions.
Is there a buyers guide on the forum? If not any common problems I should be aware of?

Dsg v manual.

How does the manual and dsg cope with remaps? Which can handle the most torque?
What sort of mielage do either start to suffer?

Cheers!

DSG is the much tougher unit, clutch packs handle 2+ with no issues, whereas the manual gearbox ones have been well known to give up on stage 1 if your the enthusiastic sort.

Put your money towards an Edition30 or Pirelli if you wanna step up from your ST.

This depends on your budget, if you have up to 11k for a well spec'd 30 or as low as 5K for a Normal GTi.
Happy hunting, and it's worth driving each of these cars to see which suits your driving style.

DSG will do it faster and better but I'm biased of course

I really want a dsg tbh, coming from a car with a paddle clutch and lightened SMF it will be luxury

Common faults are PCV & DV. Read here: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,44709.0.html

Replace the cam follower when you buy it too, as they wear and will eventually kill the camshaft and fuel pump (takes a lot of miles for this to happen tbh).

All of the above parts are around the £20-30 mark
