Airbag Warning Light issues !
« on: February 25, 2015, 09:36:28 pm »
Hi folks, JD here, long time lurker, first time poster !

It's annoying that my first post is an issue with my beloved TDI, but I am hoping you guys can help !

Keep getting an error code ;

01221 - Crash Sensor Side Airbag; Driver Side (G179): Implausible Signal
Possible Symptoms
Airbag Warning Light ON
Possible Causes
Wrong/Incompatible Crash Sensor Side Airbag; Driver Side (G179) installed
Wiring/Connections between Airbag Control Module (J234) and Crash Sensor Side Airbag; Driver Side (G179) faulty
Possible Solutions
Check Crash Sensor Side Airbag; Driver Side (G179) Part Number
Install correct Crash Sensor Side Airbag; Driver Side (G179)
Check Wiring/Connections between Airbag Control Module (J234) and Crash Sensor Side Airbag; Driver Side (G179)

The guys over at Awesome GTI, did a slight mod where they cut out/rewired some of the loom under the seat for something like this but the issue is still present
Had a local mechanic take my door apart due to lack of tools, we believed there should be a sensor in the door card, but can find no such thing !

Was wondering if anyone has had this before and knew how to resolve it ! Kinda need to get this done before MOT Time !

Thanks in advance.

JD

The drivers side crash sensor is hidden behind the outer door skin on the drivers door,  so the wiring goes through the door rubber in to the car.

The wires over time inside the rubber can perish and snap the copper even though outside insulation looks OK,  I'd start looking inside the door rubber on drivers door for broken cables.

If you Google vw g179 sensor 2 of the first pics that come up are of the door wiring
Loads of extra's and retro fits.

I've been advised that it could be the door wiring loom itself, like you say, it might perish over time, and now that my car is getting on for 11 years old at an '04 plate this may be the issue.
I'm pretty sure that we looked here and couldnt find the sensor shown on this guys photobucket

I doubt it's senor as your car is so old it will 98% be wiring in the rubber between door and car
Loads of extra's and retro fits.

I think it's best I just get the wiring loom replaced entirely if that's the case!

I have found the following part number online, seems to be the right part.
 1K0971120BM
Can anyone confirm?

Prices seem to around the £70-£85, seem fair?

Thanks in advance.

i had the airbag warning light on before.

had it checked out by garage, they told me it was the wire thats located under the drivers seat that was worn.

sounded a bit fishy to me as i am the only driver for my car and the seat only gets moved once a year when it goes in for service and is driven by the mechanic.
