New member, not new to VAG!
« on: March 29, 2015, 05:57:39 pm »
Hi

Just signed up to the forum as it seems after lots of lurking you lot know your stuff regarding the mk5 GTI - which is what I'm currently in the market for.

I've always been into VW/Audis, and owned a few: '89 Audi Coupe 2.2, '96 A4 1.8T Sport, 2001 mk4 GTTI, '93 Audi Coupe 16v, etc. I've been active on a few forums over the years too, mainly over on ukmkivs, as I kept the Golf for 6 years!

I've decided that I unfortunately need to move on from my current car, the '93 16v Coupe, as I just don't have the time and space any more to be knee deep in modification work - the plan was to tidy it up (even though it's already very tidy), drop on on KW coils and some deep dish rims, ABF inlet cam, headwork etc, and keep it clean and fresh, but.... after having a ride in a mk5 GTI recently it's safe to say I'm hooked on the idea of a change. As such, the Audi will soon be up for sale (I'm not advertising by the way admin!).

I really don't want to modify the next car as much as I have my past ones, as I don't think the mk5 GTI needs much improving, so I've joined here more to gain an overall idea of what I'm dealing with to ensure I get the best out of mk5 ownership. Also I want to be buying from a dealer so I have some degree of warranty and fallback if things go wrong, and my (surprisingly reasonable) insurance quote was based on a standard car. That said, once I'm out of any warranty period and due an insurance renewal I might just be looking at a few subtle improvements (H&R 35mm, BBS VZ etc). But that's all a long way down the road.

So, I'm updating my Autotrader account constantly, and glued to the web trying to find the perfect car, or as close to it as possible. The boxes I want ticking are: 3dr, leather, manual, any colour except blue or white, and standard. 18s would be great, but I wouldn't turn down the right car with 17s. I don't really want to be looking at older cars; 06/56 on would be better, and also big mileages are a no-no. Anything under 80ish should be fine. I've read something about the BWA being the better engine than the early AXX, but I've also read as much that there's no major advantage or disadvantage to either. I assume the talk of the BWA having more power is a bit of a myth?

So hopefully soon I'll be posting again with some pictures of a nice clean GTI!

In the meantime, here are some pics of some of my old rides:

Cheers

Quick update - deposit down on a 3dr, red, leather, climate, sunroof, 18" Monzas, full VW short life, 07, 69k.

Pick it up weds morning. It's due the next service so managed to get a decent chunk off in lieu of that and a couple of other little bits - I'll be taking it to VW for that asap. Can anyone recommend which dealer around South Yorks/North Notts is well regarded over others? I know they can apparently be hit or miss!

Pics to follow soon!

Can't wait!!! :-)

Cheers mate, I remember you off ukmkivs. I was AJPTDI on there. Dropped the 'TDI' now for obvious reasons!

Yeah the mk4 in particular was really nice, lots of time and money involved!

Just got that horrible wait til Wednesday now... tick tock.

Yeah I had viewed quite a few before this one, and I got a good feeling about it.

It's not perfect, but miles better than the others.

One little issue was that the bonnet seemed a bit stiff - the latch itself was fine but it was as if the hinges were too tight or the lifter was too strong. You had to give it a push down to shut it rather than being able to drop it shut. It would stay half open on its own. Is this a common issue?

Starting to have all those 'what if it's a bad one', 'has it had a bump' thoughts now I've commited!!! :/

I'm trying to convince myself I'm just being paranoid as it's a big purchase!

Well I picked it up early after some last minute changes. 35 quids worth of temp insurance for the evening (ouch), taxed up over the phone, and a nice steady drive back down the M62 and M1. Really impressed with how refined this thing is.

Goes nicely too!

We all know that 'new car buzz'.... yes I'll sleep a happy man tonight!

Result.

Cheers pal!

Yeah I'm going to give it the once over up at my bro's at some point, he's basically rebuilt a V8 Jag himself and he's a tech genius so the bonnet isn't a great concern!

Booked in at VW Rotherham for annual service, belt, and pump on Friday too. They said on the phone it's not due any recalls, but...

I think after that I might take it to a specialist - check for any boost leaks, check PCV, DV, maybe get it on the dyno. All just for peace of mind really.

No issue getting it on the rollers straight after a new cambelt I assume?

It'll either be Statllers in Sheff, or Shark in Mansfield - met Ben a few years ago and went round Oulton in the old BAM Octy with him (much fun!), he's a knowledgeable guy and did some work for a good mate of mine with the intallation of a hybrid and map on a BKD.

Any recommendations between the two? As in if it turns out I need a new PCV, rev D or G DV they'll have them in stock and get it done there and then, rather than taking the car home and waiting for the part to come in? I know Statllers have a good rep, Hurdy's R being quite an example.

I'm not getting carried away just yet, I want to get the basics covered before anything else.

But with that said, if anyone knows of an ed30 front up for sale (genuine only please), let me know.

Turns out it was cheaper to insure modified over standard. That's like a big red rag to a bull to me!

Plans are: skirts and rear painted (leaving the lower middle bit black), ed30 front, 35mm H&R. Alloys; VZ in a few weeks. And a good polish of those tailpipes!!!

Oh and a quick thanks to Adrian Flux for what it's worth, been with them since I was about 21 and they keep on looking after me 13 years on.
