Advice pls - Buying a Gti with faulty instrument display
« on: April 10, 2015, 10:58:10 pm »
Hi Guys, newbie here. I'm looking to buy a mk5 gti as a second car. I've seen one on autotrader that seems a good price for the spec (although high miles), but has a faulty display in the instrument cluster.

I haven't been to view the car yet, but the dealer tells me it's around a £350 job to repair.

I'd really appreciate some advice here, not sure if this is a common problem and if £350 would cover a repair.

I've asked the dealer if he would do a deal subject to getting the display fixed, awaiting a response.

Sound fishy? Why wouldn't they just get it fixed then sell it?

Thoughts?

clocks have immobiliser built in remove the clocks fit new ones and guess what car will not start thats why they will probably not do it. There is not many people that will do this job just had mine done and to be honest its not hard just not easy to find a person to do it unless you are willing to travel also £350 will cover the cost no problem

Thanks for the info. Can I ask where you had the repair done?

Definitely negotiate at least a couple of hundred off, but don't let it put you off.

There are guys on here such as @Eddie-NL with expensive equipment to transplant a used cluster into the car.
This is more of an aftermarketrepair as VW can't do anything but replace it with new.
Also, if it is just a pixel problem my mate recetly got his one repaired with a new screen for £100ish with a few days turnaround.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

The advert shows a 05 plate on the car

If the car still starts then you can easily read the immobiliser data from it and write it onto another cluster. I have the tools to do this. Based in London if that helps and wont even cost half of what vw have quoted you

Alright this sounds promising. vw55raz, thanks for the offer, may need to get in touch soon. Where in London are you? I'm in Sutton.

Any other thoughts on the ad?

Hi guys can I ask a favour? Looks like a trader called olsen-72 has a set of highline clocks for sale, but as a new member I have no way of getting in contact! Could someone possible PM him or direct him to this thread? Wondering if those clocks would work with the Gti I posted the link to.

Are you vw-retrofit? I can see it in my sent messages, could you check again?

Otherwise if you're able to PM me, could you send me your email address? Cheers

Annoying this no PM restriction, but I guess there are loads of spammers around so the forum has to take precautions.
