6N
« on: April 23, 2015, 07:38:21 pm »
Had a 6N2 6N Polo sitting for 4 years completely unloved, tyres flat, moss growing... decided to bring it back to life today; to sell (55k on it '98 S plate!!) or just a dog snotter run around.

Bought a can of diesel, changed the battery, top the fluids and tried to start it... ... started first time!! WTF.

Needs more work though, discs seized, tyres, and Open Air roof isn't working... but just very impressed - think I'll grab a few days insurance on it and take for MOT.

That's all. :happy2:

Personally I'd clean it right up and make it into a euro style car. Drop it on its arse and a nice set of deep dish rims on it
How hard can it be?

Yes, you're right mate, it is a 6N.

Any idea of how to fix the Open Air?  Can hear the motor trying but roof doesn't move... Can it all be taken apart from within; around the headlining?  It's not 'that' important really, passing its MOT is the first stage, but it would be nice to sort it.

I wonder if VCDS will work on a car this age...? Will try it later.

That would be quite cool, but tbh with the amount of speed bumps and what the car will get used for, I'd be happy to just get it back to road worthy condition :)

Sounds like a similar project to my mk4 Golf V5. If it has a diagnostic port (under the ash tray by the gear stick) then you can plug it in for diagnostics.

I'm at a point with my mk4 where I'm deciding do I keep it all stock so it sells to a wider market, or keep it as a run around and add some personal touches and OEM+ stuff. Its tricky not to get carried away when you're planning for stage 2+ on a mk5 GTI. :happy2:

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Yes bud, it has the port in a cubby hole in the dash (I found it today)... scanned it, had a imbolizer fault but unlike the GTI it doesn't date stamp it (I couldn't auto scan as the gateway wouldn't allow it)... and that was it, no other codes!! Amazing.  I know full well this hasn't been scanned for at least (if at all) 12 years+ I cleared it anyway, see if it re-appears.

Now, if the Open Air Panoramic roof isn't working, and there's no fault codes, am I correct in assuming the switch and motor are OK?  And perhaps it's just a dirty track?
If it passes MOT, I'll rip it all out and have a good look.

I fear the V5 Golf would be a nicer project than this, this has the Tractor 1.9D (with no turbo)... the V5, if memory serves has a rather nice note to it! :)

Another VW has joined the family recently, in the way of a White Edition UP! I love it, no power but great fun - they should make a GTI version.

Some pics please.

I was thinking about starting a thread for our other cars. But i would be ashamed of the state on my beater a 97 Seat Alhambra. The paint now has a matt finish and starting to flake on a couple of panels.

haha pics, yes, will sort... it's currently still got the moss, an engine bay FULL of cobwebs and a skip blocking it in (no honestly) so will need to show it some love first - got some new discs coming, if I can get the old ones off (welded with rust).

The paint is definitely starting to dull on the Polo too, the lacquer seems sound though and not a hint of rust!  A wash/clay/polish/wax should bring it back a bit I think.

We want the moss, skip and the cob webs in the pics please.

I should really give the beater some TLC especially as i cannot afford a replacement and couldn't keep the Golf looking so good without it.

It's Alive!  Passed MOT today, no advisories....plucky little bugger :drinking:

Open Air (needs new switch, which I'll be sorting, as it closes but doesn't open from switch, manual is smooth though).
56k miles - runs sweet, should really keep for winter run around, but...

...too many cars, will probably sell (won't say that too loudly though as might hurt its feelings :P )

Cheers m8, I didn't do a whole lot really; front discs, brake bleed, nearside CV, Oil 'n filter, front tyres, wipers and decent clean.

Shame they don't fetch a lot of money, as it's making it a harder decision to let it go.

The paint work is better than my GTI and the fuel consumption is astonishing.

Anyone after a 1st car for somone or perhaps a winter hack?  12 months MOT, running daily now.

It's HUGELY economical (to the point of being ridiculous), it is slow but it really isn't much of an issue overall; esp. for requirements above, great turn in, easy to drive...  56k miles, got some nice brand new Vredstein All Season tyres on it which get a great write up in the snow.  Discs (Pagid) are bedding in and getting better, new Bosch Flat Blades, Oil 'n Filter Quantum 5w40, interior immaculate, few scrubs on the outside but overall VERY good.  Had a new Clutch and Flywheel less than 2k ago.

Built like tanks the 6N/6N2
If we didn't have to pay out for other cars we'd keep it but alas.

56k, New MOT, Tyres, Brakes, Oil, Clutch/DMF less than 2k ago
£850 ono
