low speed steering noise
« on: May 17, 2015, 06:38:40 pm »
Hi guys, noticed a bonging noise when steering at low speed mostly when manuvouring even on small turns not just full lock, doesn't seem to be from one side specifically. Not noticed anything else wrong just wondering what the most common issues are that cause this? What should I check first? Cheers.

Springs or topmounts possibly.

I seem to be getting a similar thing, a few quiet 'pops' when parking. It doesn't really concern me, but I'll keep an eye (ear) on it. I probably should have replaced the topmounts when I got the H&R springs fitted.

Cheers mate, I thought it could be top mounts since they're the original and I had the KW's fitted about 17k ago now. I think Silverstone may have killed them but I expected to break something.

Give us an update when you sort it, it'll give me an idea if/when mine gets worse!

I had similar and changed top mounts for RS3 mounts seems to have cured the issue  :happy2:

I've heard about that upgrade? Do you know what the part numbers are? What's the advantage of the RS3 ones? Thanks

Part No's are as follows

8J0 412 331 - Strut Mount x2
6N0 412 249 C - Bearing x2
N 910 216 01 - Nut x2
N 101 277 07 - Bolt x6

they seem to be heavier duty than the standard GTI Mounts with stiffer rubber so should be more durable, I have my motor lowered and it killed my standard mounts hence the reason for the upgrade.

I've ordered those strut mounts for my Eddie that will get fitted with the rest of the new parts. Just the strut mount is uprated, the rest are the same parts the GTI already has.

I also got new bearings and shorter bumpstops (since the suspension is lowered).
