I was trying to borrow a compression tester but had no joy. Considered buying one but thought I'd have another check over the car. Pulled the plug out on cylinder 1 and there's oil present, so it's misfiring, blue smoke, fuel smell in oil... And with the new plugs and coil packs to rule them out I'm fairly convinced it's an internal problem.
I've started stripping it down to take the head off, its not a massive job. I'd be very happy if it was valve related but the oil is making me think it's not. Either way it's a opportunity to have the head de coked, new cambelt, water pump, valve stems etc.
