My 3dr black GTi
« on: June 20, 2015, 04:11:57 pm »
Just thought I'd post a couple of pictures of the one I've just bought. Someone on here may have owned it some point?

It's got an engine issue at the moment but once I've sorted that then plans are Bigger intercooler (unsure what to go for yet) auto tech pump internals, cat back exhaust or suitcase delete pipe? Then mapping at R tech for now. Will want to do more in the future, Probably keep the exterior as it is, possibly add wind deflectors and ed30/r32 rear lights.

Nice looking car mate!
Go for the S3 intercooler, it's cheap and does the job.  :happy2:

Thanks, what's needed for stage 2/2+??
Is the s3 intercooler fine for that setup?

I'll be getting the cylinder head off next week so will post some more pics up.

I use that intercooler on my stage 2+ K04 Cupra, you can feel a slight decrease in power in hot summer days, here in Bucharest we get over 35 degrees Celsius. But this is rare, and in UK you'll be fine.
For stage 2-2+ you need 4 things, S3 intercooler, LOBA/APR/Autotech HPFP, Exhaust, cold air intake. But then you  will feel the need for bigger brakes (Cupra/S3 with a good pad to start), and better suspension.

Cheers! :drinking:

Paintwork looks lovely! Shame it doesn't last long on black cars though.

Started the strip down today

Inlet manifold removal is quite fiddly. Not to much left to do, hopefully have it off on Wednesday when I've got abit more time.

Couple of intake valve shots. This engine has covered 98,000 miles, I'm guessing they've never been cleaned.

Hopefully should feel some sort of difference when the head is de-coked.

Not had chance to do anything else to golf yet... My transit broke down yesterday with suspected injector failure and as I need that for work the golf will be taking a back seat for the next few days :(

Stuck using my GSXR but atleast the weather is good! Hopefully have the rest of the engine stripped sometime over weekend and see what lurks inside. Keeping my fingers crossed for a cheap fix lol

Bad news Ricky. At least you'll save some time with the GSXR.  :jumping:

Well got the head off today and this is what lurked inside...

It looks as though something has gone inside and got trapped as there's some light denting to the top of the piston and obviously the liner is nackered

Don't no what to do from here

Rebuild? Would involving boring out and larger Pistons
Try and get a new liner put in cylinder one?
Second hand engine?

I would go the second-hand route like you're looking into in the for sale section - taking into account the AXX heads seem to be requested after on both this site and eBay.

I'd prefer to try and get a bottom end first but I think that's going to be easier said than done as I've only seen one for sale.

My head has just had a new chain kit too but I could swap it over if I get a complete engine. There's other bits on this motor id want to swap to another and it's had quite a few new parts.

Can't believe how much people want for engines!

Quick update...

I've bought a bottom end. It's a 48k BWA lump, not saw it yet I've left a deposit on PayPal and going to collect it tomorrow from Sheffield. Hopeing it's fine when I get there.

Is there anything that people recommend to change while the engines stripped before I put it back in the car?

So far my list is:

Cambelt kit
Water pump
Head gasket kit
Head set
Probably thinking I should throw a clutch kit in while its apart

Don't need a cam follower, pcv or DV as they were new about 2 months ago. Also had new plugs at the same time.

Thermostat would be added to my list along with ultrasonic cleaning of the injectors.
