2005 Golf GT FSI 2.0 (not GTI) - new member help!!
« on: June 27, 2015, 01:38:23 pm »
Hi Ladies and Gents, I have just joined the forum - I hope you don't mind, I don't have a GTI it's the GT FSI 2.0 but I was hoping you would be able to impart some thoughts / ideas.

A couple of months ago I purchased my first VW Golf, the aforementioned 2.0 GT FSI mk5. I am very impressed with the smooth running and VW comfort so far and already I'm of the opinion that now I've had a Golf I'll probably always have one!

I hope my question doesn't attract too many negative responses, I am aware that if I wanted a sporty car I should have gone for the GTI but at the time I needed a car very quickly (previously had a Vectra with a blown turbo!) and, having always wanted a Golf this seemed to tick all the right boxes. Having made the step from a diesel to a petrol I have now started looking at modifications - I'm not very technically minded when it comes to cars but I've got as far as installing a K&N Typhoon induction kit which sounds amazing, it's had a remap (didn't do much but still...) and I'm currently awaiting delivery of some new 18" sporty alloys to tart it up a bit. I'm also looking at the R8 style angel eye headlights as I'm drawn to the LED day time running lights... call me a magpie if you want but I like them! On a rolling road I'm getting 170bhp now which isn't a bad increase from the 150 standard after the K&N & remap.

My question is this... what else can I do to this car to improve performance? I'm not trying to make it something it isn't but I do enjoy a car with a bit of 'umph' and having searched the internet for ideas I'm not finding much... I've read a bit about cam upgrades but not sure what that's all about really, also I'm wondering whether suspension upgrades for my new 18's would be worth investigating.

It's a very open ended question so any suggestions you can offer will be much appreciated! If there's anything I haven't thought of please tell me, I really don't know much about what options I have with this car so if you think you are stating the obvious, you probably aren't!

Thanks in advance guys,

Chris

Ben!

Hi Chris,

I think it would certainly be worth looking into suspension upgrades, you'll transform how it drives massively with some upgrades. Also it'll probably look sky high when its on your new 18's.
As for power mods, I've recently done the 'pre cat delete' on my downpipe. I don't know if your FSI has a pre cat but would be worth looking into.

Ben

A camshaft upgrade would probably get you most gains. Basically you would swap your camshaft over for an upgraded one where the camshaft lobes will be bigger/different shaped, this will then have an effect and the cam duration (the time each valve stays open) and the valve lift (the distance the valve opens) by doing this it will allow more air/fuel into the cylinder, more air/fuel leads to a bigger bang upon combustion thus making the car go faster.

There are different forms of cams you can buy, you could go for a fast road set up or a race cam, with each the cam duration and valve lift will be more than stock cams with race being the most aggressive cam set up. You will find that both sets of cams will effect the cars idle, more so with the race set up the will lead to rough idle and could even allow the car to stall on idle at times.

Couple a set of upgraded cams to a upgraded exhaust and the sound it will make will be pretty sweet, and you will notice the rough idle through the exhaust and it will sound like a bit of a splutter.

If you do go for cams you'll have to have another remap to suit the cams, where they will adjust the ignition timing and fuel ratio's. Cams and an exhaust will pretty much max out the amount of power you can get from the car, after that you'll be looking and a engine swap from a GTI to get any more power.

I hope this helps, I'm no engine expert though so forgive me if I've got any of my facts wrong!

Although after saying all this your chances of finding some upgraded cams for your engine look slim, I can't seem to find any  :sad1:
