Been sorting out the little niggles with my recently purchased 55 GTI and one thing I have noticed is the rubber seals at the base of the windows (3 door so only fronts) seem to have perished and have become flaky. They were originally covered in moss and after a first wash of the car a lot of bits came off and they now look all crappy.
There also seems to be a slight gap between the window and the seal on the outside (about 1mm or less at points, is worse on the drivers side than passenger) that looks as if it wouldn't form a tight seal and as if the water would just run down into the door? Is this a potential issue? The rubber/plastic lips on MK5 Golfs seem very different to most other cars and look more like they trap water than cause it to run off down the side of the door. If I push the door outer panel in the rubber sits tight, as if the outer door panel isn't sitting right or as if the windows themselves aren't pushed out as close to the seal as they should be. My windows do seem to rattle in the frame and make a horrible noise if I close the door while the window is open. Its nagging me cause whenever it rains or I wash the car it feels like water is just pouring down the gap and inside my door which doesn't seem right.
Had a search but couldn't find anyone with similar issues so maybe I am just being crazy, my first decent car so I worry about every little thing I notice ha
This is passenger side, mainly just perished.
Drivers side. Kinda hard to see it but there is small gap between the window and rubber seal. Bit easier to see in the photo below where the gap between the plastic/rubber lip and the black section of the door is more apparent. It is only like this on the drivers side, on the passengers side the seal and black pillar of the door sits flush together.
Got Climair wind deflectors on now and they seemed to have pushed the seal closer at the front of the door by the wing mirror. Previously this was where the gap was widest and definitely not creating a seal against the window. Are seals something that are commonly replaced or is it some kind of misalignment causing this? Or am I just insane/OCD?
