My Tornado Red GTi
« on: March 21, 2022, 09:17:09 pm »
I've been a member of this forum for nearly 11 years and never has a thread in members rides  :ashamed:!

I joined originally in 2011 when i was selling my Mk4 R32 and looking for a mk5 pirelli gti which never happened !

To cut a long story short after quite afew different Vw and audis and an impreza turbo i've finally got a mk5 GTi

Had it just over a week now and love it sure it will make a great daily, wasnt looking to spend alot my budget was 3k so was looking at 05/06 models with over 100k miles, went to london from sheffield to look at a black 3 door that was supposed to be really good condition but when i got there was far from it so walked away then called to view this Tornado red one in worksop on the way back looked decent condition full service history ect so ended up taking it home  :happy2:

Details..........

2005 '05 plate
Tornado Red 5 Door
Manual
126k full service history
Full Heated Leather
6 Disc changer in armrest
18" Monza's in grey
Stance+ Lowering springs
Ebay De Res pipe
Milltek back box

Has abit of lacquer peel on the headlights and a tiny bit under the boot badge/handle and fuel filler cap but no rust.

Here's a couple of pics from the advert............

The drive is now completely Volkswagen !

T5.1 Caravelle is the family bus and the Mk2 Gti 16v is the long term keeper

Looks in really good condition - Tornado red is such a legendary colour.
Leather looks really good too - no evident drivers bolster wear.
Any plans?

Yeh it seems to have been well looked after, i think its had some paint in its life as the wings are not original but on the whole looks good for a 16 year old car, leather is really good  :happy2:

No plans for it as yet just keep it maintained and upgrade things as i go, it needs some new centre caps and wheel bolt covers for a start and will be doing the cam follower myself as i dont know if thats been done.

Will update the thread as i go, always enjoy reading other peoples threads and seeing what they have done to their cars

Wings will have probably been replaced due to rust.

Looks pretty decent on the pics, it’s surprising for how little money mk5’s can be picked up for if you shop around. I’m pretty sure a mate of mine at work went to look at that same black one in London! Told me the same story!
Getting too old for this...

Yeh that black one was a real disappointment especially after driving 185 miles !

The wings have definitely been replaced they are not original, car seems good so far will see how it goes.

Gearbox is abit on the notchy side, ive done some researching on here into that and see alot of info about the input shaft shims for the early mk5's so will have a go at that myself i think.

Before diving in too deep - Do an oil change and linkage re-alignment

Nothing much to update so far, just been using it for the daily commute and getting 30-32mpg so pretty happy with that best ive had going ultra steady is 35mpg.

Only thing ive done so far is use some ValetPro Black to the future on the rear bumper and side skirts, the bumper was really faded so has made a massive difference.

Golf has been fine for the last couple of months until last week it randomly started to bog out and die when setting off occasionally then wouldnt start for anywhere between 5 minutes to a couple of hours, i put my carista on it and it came P310C and P1063 Fuel pressure regulation control range not reached.

I had already got the cam follower kit to do as i didnt know if or when it was last done so bought a new fuel filter to start with and see how it goes.

Managed to do the cam follower yesterday what an arse of a job ! Would have been easy if it wasnt for the dreaded banjo bolt  :fighting:

Got it out eventually after a fight so all good now with a new bolt fitted, follower was definitely getting ready for replacement i reckon, also had to do the pcv pipe as i noticed when taking the hpfp out it was taped up and broken.

Still got the fuel filter to do yet.

Good job.

I was just thinking “I don’t recognise that bolt”, but then I won’t because I’ve got the flexi hose version.

Looks like a lovely clean and well looked after car, congrats! We bought our MK5 GTI 6 months ago, 05 plate with similar mileage but in Laser Blue. Can't say it hasn't had its problems but most were minor, two valves, got the chain replaced and rear brakes. Hoping this is the last of it, now to actually spend some money on making the car better!

Thanks and all the best with yours too !

It’s not actually cost me much so far but has plenty of things that need sorting !
