Converted my Mk5 key fob to a Mk7. A bit bigger and heavier, but just looks nicer.

Does this cost a lot? It's a small upgrade but something I'd love to do! Mk5 key just looks so out-dated now.

Morgan, have a look on the customkeys website. They did mine for £40  :drinking:

@Morgen As Shaun said (and his post is what gave me the idea to try it myself). That's a nice easy option and it's all done for you.

I did mine with £10 parts and half an hour of my time. I little bit of grinding required to get your original key blade into the new mk7 slot (about 1.9mm required and the original is 2.15mm or there abouts). That was the only bit that wasn't straight forward.

The blade is angled 90 degrees different to the original, so takes a bit of getting used to when switching the ignition on. They are also a bit bigger and heavier, but I like the look.

Cheers, Stu.

@Stupots Hey man can you give a link to where you bought the parts for the MK7 key, something I want to try out myself before going with the £40 alternative if I screw it up :signLOL:

Got some work done this weekend.

Also swapped my key fob to a custom keys mk7 fob, but aint to happy about the fitment? I can't unlock the car and the blade is hitting something on the side... Will have a further look of it tomorrow.

I have 3 of the Mk7 style fobs left if anyone wants to give it a go. I'll list them in the for sale section for 10 quid each delivered if a few of you want to have a play.

Cheers

@Christiank Blimey, how well does the MK6 dash fit? I know it's the same shell, but wondering about wiring loom, lining up with MK5 door trims and things like that. Any gotchas?

Need to slap over passager airbag, rewire the connection to hazard light switch, need wirering for passenger airbag off light and you have to extend current wires for the sun light sensor in the dash.

I did pull the metal frame of to paint it, that also made it much easier to change out the flap adjustment motors for the clima system.

I'll take some pictures of how the door cords fit later for ya

I replaced the rear passenger side door lock, which is the 3rd lock mechanism I've replaced... in two weeks! (it turned out only the drivers side rear door was locking all along)

Anyway, as a nice bonus my hazard lights now flash when I lock the car (previously they only did a double-flash on unlock). I guess this means that if your lights don't flash on locking that one of your lock modules is dead.

Replaced the V158 potentiometer for the climate control unit. I now have cold air from driverside and passenger side...along with two forearms cut to pieces due to the tiny room I had to work!
