DSG gearbox. Whats it like to live

been looking at sciroccos with the DSG gearbox, just wandering what they are like to live with day to day and for any common problems with them.

Also what's with the servicing of them. Is it expensive to get done at a dealer or an independent outlet, also is it something that can be done yourself easily?

Ive never been a fan of autos before but I love my DSG.
I'd say take one for a test drive see how you feel about it.

Oil change on them isn't cheap usually about £140 but only needs doing every 40k.
There is a guide on how to do it but I'd rather have it done properly and get the stamp.

It's what I'm like with autos, not really a big fan of them but hearing more and more about them I'm tempted by them.

ive had manual in all my cars and have driven autos too but the dsg is amazing. really smooth and quick gear changes.

dsg service is now 179 fixed price at all dealers.

Same here....

Always had Manuals, I did have a Merc 190 Auto once :)

The DSG is awesome, it's like no other Auto. Driving around normally in "D" you don't even realise half the time it's changing. Put your foot down and use the paddle shift and you instantly turn into an F1 Driver with split second gear changes :)

Mines going in Wednesday to VW for a DSG Service, £179 with their "Fixed" plan servicing.

I love mine but plenty of people will tell you they don't live driving them, they are like marmite tbh.

Great if you want to increase the power of the car as the DSG box is capable to handling this but expensive if they go wrong.

The way to best enjoy DSG is to pop her into M-mode and think and drive exactly as you would a conventional Manual but pop her into D-mode (Auto) when you are in urban, 20/30/40 mph zones or a traffic jam crawl. It's the best of both worlds in my opinion.

113,000 miles on DSG and I would not consider another car without DSG or equivalent. But some close their minds to it and never like what the box of tricks offers. Each To Their Own of course  :smiley:

I had a b5 passat in auto and the mpg was around 25mpg, In my mk5 Golf tdi DSG, i still get same mpg as I would in a manual. Did a 130 mile trip on the m1 and averaged 58mpg.

Doing 65 miles a day with mine with mixture of Country, A road and motor way driving. Normally leave it in D when cruising from home on the normal roads and motorway use S if driving quickly on these roads but go straight into M for country driving so I don't have to brake so much.

First DSG car Ive own and wouldn't by a manual again if the choice allowed  :happy2: Just service it properly like people have suggested and you will love it.

DSG is the way forward especially if you are driving around town or stuck in traffic, I also find them smoother drive....

They're also extremely effective on track when mapped. You can get changes in when it would be plain dangerous in a manual as the car doesn't have time to get unbalanced.
And as already said, blissful in traffic. Wouldn't have anything else now as this suits me perfectly.

I went and test drove one this afternoon, and well I'm sold! Really smooth compared to other autos I've driven/ been in. The pick up was great, the car took off nicely I was very impressed!

So now on the lookout for a lime green scirocco, with the 2.0 tdi 170 engine with a full leather interior (always wanted one with this spec, so now is the time while I can!)  :laugh:
