Looks really ugly after 1700 km ''Autobahn''. :jumping:
Let's talk about a small meeting in april or may at the ring.
This one is worth every penny in the wintertime:

Raeder is KW guys right?
Might pay them a visit next time i hit the ring. Great shots The Bruce :happy2:
-
ashtray brushed aluminium (from very early Mk5 GTI) and two more buttons
(still without any functionality):
Really nice car! I hate you because you are so close to Nurburgring .
One thing I do not like, though... That "winter" button... It only makes sense with the 1.4 TSI engine since it is for the compressor.
-
Very tidy car!
Where did you get those S3 jacking pads from? Do they fit straight on without modification?
-
Yes, Raeder are KW specialists and they run the new TT-RS for Audi on the Ring.
Lots of GT3, GT-R an the likes there . . .
I'm unfortunately not as close to the Ring as I'd like. It's about 650 km.
I've had planned an function for the 'W'-button, but later I decided not to do this mod.
Now I have another idea. I'll let you know.
The S3 jack pads do fit straight in without any problem. Part numbers:
8N0 804 583 rubber (4 x)
8P0 802 845 front left (1 x)
8P0 802 846 front right (1 x)
8P0 802 847 rear left or right (2 x)
- wax VW: D 308 SP5 A1
- silicon grease (to slip in easily)
price in Germany: 43,32 € + wax + silicon
Just 10 minutes of work !!
:happy2:
-
Last pic is great. So are you running 19's now. Does not go against you modding principle of stream line and light.
-
19" for beauty - 17" for speed
(18" for snow - three sets of wheels)
:drinking:
these heavy weight 19" make slow - no doubt !!
-
Very Lovely car Bruce, very subtle mods, very much like the under car aerodynamics, can see several big advantages to them and yet no one can see that youve altered the car :happy2:
What was the reason for replacing just the first muffler on the exhaust, did this smaller box increase sound and performance wihtout making it too loud? and with OEM look?
-
What was the reason for replacing just the first muffler on the exhaust,
did this smaller box increase sound and performance wihtout making it too loud?
and with OEM look?
Most rear mufflers are larger than the ultraflat stock one. I don't like to see them
from behind. So I wanted OEM-look.
And making the underbottom flat and fitting a large rear exhaust doesn't make
any sense to me.
I expected:
- less back pressure
- more 'italian' sound
- no drone
- no rusty stock muffler
I got:
- reasonably louder
- little bit drone
- excellent finish
- perfect fitment
My opinion:
- louder than Milltek resonated (rear system)
- maybe bit too noisy
- price ok
I'll make a direct comparison to Milltek soon. :happy2:
ps
Next year I'd like to use my 18" BBS with Direzza 03G for track and the 17" Monza
for winter. The 19" Monza will remain for summer/road.
-
^^^^
Interesting about the back box. I didn't like to see it hanging low either and Milltek made me a shallow one and with hardly any 'stuffing' in it. The result is slightly louder than their Non-resonated version and much lower in sound. Makes the best of a 4-pot sound limitation.
-
What did you do to the gear stick? Just cut it down?
-
Yes, if you remove the shift knob you'll see the spring for reverse.
So there's very little space to shorten the stick. Only one inch or so.
In German: http://s10.directupload.net/file/d/2350/yuyvs22d_pdf.htm
Robin, I have to compare it to a friend's full Milltek, then I'll report again.
But to my (old) ears it's much lower in sound than before, even when driving
constantly on highways in the 100 - 130 km/h range.
I have readjusted the exhaust system a few days later to OEM-specs.
It's better since then, but still a bit noisy. Some might think it's still too quiet.

I just found out this thread! :happy2:
Very nice car the Bruce!! The way I like them, a discreet clean OEM look from outside and a lot of performance mod's inside.
Can you tell us more about the Sachs coilover?
Do you have any idea of what it worth compare to Bilstein PSS10?

Construction is like Bilstein B16:
single tube, upside down, gas pressure, dampers comb. adjustable (but 20 clicks)
I really like it.
Performs very well on Nordschleife. Ok, on very poor roads I wish a softer suspension.
At slalom (like Auto-X) I'd like to have it even harder. But it seems to be best of both worlds.

They look suspiciously like Bilstein PSS10...
May be like H&R Coilover they use Bilstein internal. Or Bilstein use Sachs ones...
Do you have linear or progressive springs?
I'm planning to replace progressive springs of my Bilstein by linear ones and to rebuild the damper inside in order to improve right and left balance.
Bilstein building tolerence between dampers is 15% Öhlins is about 5% the workshop I use to go can build them at 3%.
-
Fuscobal, a guy from this forum tested the Sachs coilover. He had B16, had a little accident where one spring was replaced and in this time tested the Sachs suspension. He went with it at Hungaroring. After the B16 spring came, he went back to B16. His review says that Sachs is nowhere near B16 (at least for the Track). The Sachs suspension is softer, much softer than the B16. He had wheels rub with a medium setup something that never happen with B16.
-
Thanks rex for this information. :happy2:
-
Sachs manufactures their own dampers (they are OEM supplier for Volkswagen
and others and make dampers for Ferrari F1 and McLaren). I believe they buy
their springs from Eibach.
These springs have some progression. I was thinking of other racing springs
as well. I know a A3 owner with Sachs Performance who has bought some stiffer
custom made springs from Eibach.
Rex, I'm wondering about this. When I adjust the dampers to 15 of 20 clicks it's too
hard for my taste on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Even in the middle of the range
it's very hard on country roads. It's much stiffer than OEM or the very popular H&R
monotube coilovers. But I never had the B16 in my car.
Maybe the situation is little different because of my verx stiff 28/24 mm sway bars.
Nevertheless I like the Bilstein suspensions as well. We have a B12 kit in our G4 TDI.
Don't misunderstand me, I don't want to say Sachs is the one and only and I don't
know the B16 on the Mk.V GTI, but this seems a bit strange to me.
-
Fuscobal car is also very heavy because of his sound system.
You are right Bruce, Stock suspension on my car were Sachs ones.
I have PSS10 set on 8/9 at the Ring some 28/24 H&R sway bars set on hard front and rear and I have also some rubbing at the ring.
Any way! The Bruce, can you compare your Sachs to your Golf 4 TDI Bilstein B12.
As B12 are juste B8 provided with Bilstein (made by H&R) springs and that I had B8 on my car before, it will give me an idea.
-
Don't get me wrong, Sachs Performance is better for road use than B16 (according to Fuscobal' review). But for track use it is just not hard enough.
On Nring I use 8-9 setup for B16. I have 26/24 hard/hard H&R ARB setup, but I fitted this only after Nring
Fuscobal has 26mm H&R front and 27mm BSH back (soft/soft) setup.
I will try to translate the review that Fuscobal had about Sachs:
"Monday (9th of August) I had the chance to test the new adjustable Sachs racing coilovers on Hungaroring (without my will). A week before this event I hit a pot hole which affected my front B16 springs and because I could not wait for the springs to arrive I borrowed this Sachs suspension (it was new). The Sachs Coilovers has a built quality similar to B16/PSS10 and you can tune it in more ways (20 settings apposed to 10 for PSS10). I got to test the suspension at Hungaroring and on the 1000 mile to and from Hungaroring. Conclusions:
1) On the road
- Sachs (set to 10/20 front and back) is much more refined and it deals better with the bumps in our roads. I was really surprised by the comfort of this suspension even with the big rims and small tire wall (BBS RS-GT 19 inch, 235x35)
- Steering responsiveness is almost as good as B16.
2) On the track
- Sachs (set to 15/20 front and 10/20 back) was decent for a suspension with progressive springs but not at the level of B16
- Although the setup was 15/20 and the suspension was almost as high as possible (could be lowered another 5-6cm), the wheels would rub in the fender on some corners where heavy braking was followed by a sharp turn (one of the causes is that my car is 170kg heavier than a stock GTI because of the sound system)
Final conclusion: Sachs Coilover is a very good suspension for bumpy roads with a sport behavior and with a far better roll characteristics over the stock GTI suspension. For the people that drive mostly in the city and once a while fast road I think this suspension is better that the B16. For the people that visit the track frequently and need every last drop of performance, B16 is for sure the better choice."

Tanks rex for those further informations. It's a pity for us He didn't try to set them on 16/18. Any way, it seems indeed, that Sachs are a bit softer than Bilstein.
And then may be being too soft for an heavier car or Auto X runs compare to Bilstein.
-
Thank you, Rex. Comparison of this kind are sadly rare. :happy2:
Would be great to read more of this.
I'd suggest adjusting the rear dampers to '15' minimum with 170 kg
in the trunk if on track.
Maybe we will make a comparison with Sachs and Bilstein by our own
this summer at the Ring.
As well important: the tires. As you know I use Federal 595 RS-R.
With road tires you need less stiffness, with true semi slicks you need
more.
ps:
The G4 B12 is much softer than the G5 Sachs !
A drove a friend's ED30 with B6 several times as well, much softer again.

In Italy 2009 still with stock suspension: :driver:

Fantastic photos! Love your car

For everyone interested in anti roll bars I made this table to compare the several stock and aftermarket bars.
Be careful when comparing tube and solid types !!
In general: aftermarket sway bars are stiffer and they are adjustable front and rear to balance the car. :happy2:
They all reduce body roll. Ride comfort is reduced just by a small amount.
Some examples:
model / diameter front ( x thickness) / diameter rear (x thickness)
OEM:
A3 Ambition/S-Line: 22,5 x 3,5 / 20,7 x 2,8 both tube
Golf V GTI: 23,6 x 3,5 / 21,7 x 3,0 both tube
Golf V R32: 22,0 solid / 21,7 x 3,0 tube (4-motion)
Golf VI GTI: 23,6 x 3,5 / 21,7 x 3,0 PR-0BF or 21,7 x 3,6 PR-0BM (DCC?) both tube
Golf VI R: 22,0 solid / 21,7 x 3,6 tube (4-motion)
Scirocco R: 23,6 x 3,5 / 21,7 x 3,6 both tube
Touran 170 HP: 23,0 solid / 21,7 x 3,0 tube
Passat R36: 23,6 solid / 21,7 x 3,6 tube (4-motion)
Sharan 2011: 24.0 mm / 20.0 mm both solid
adjustable sport after-market ARBs:
Whiteline: 22 / 22 mm both solid (non adjustable)
H&R 'regular': 26 / 22 mm both solid
Eibach AntiRoll: 26 / 23 mm both solid
KW clubsport: 26 / 23 mm both solid
H&R 'big boy': 28 / 24 mm both solid
H&R 'big boy' II: 28 / 28 mm both solid (available at AWE only)
H&R 4-motion: 25 / 25 mm both solid
Whiteline: 24 / 24 mm both solid
Neuspeed: 25 / 25 mm both solid
Autotech: 25 / 25 mm tube
APR/Hotchkis: 27 / 27 mm tube (does anybody know thicknesses?)
KW CS are identical to Eibach, just painted yellow instead of dark red.

An awesome car and some awesome pics.
What happened on the track/airfield with the cone? Oversteer spin?
-
Yes, it was cold and a bit wet, so no chance to the get the rear tyres warm.
So we had overstering probs. Had a friend driving my car when I took the picture.
One hour later I had similar problems.

WALK, front bushes of S3 arm, S3 hub and bushes of rear trailing arm.
All bushes come from Whiteline.
-
Bruce - on your pictures above can you confirm what you have their please.
Are you running S3 hub and arm with everything else OEM Golf e.g. wheel bearing.
-
Yes, the GTI wheel bearings were still good, so I stayed with them.
As I said on the S3 hub thread all the bearings have the same dimensions.

:happy2:
-
So why did you go with S3 swivel and not the TT?
-
First I've got the S3 swivels last year when I didn't know the TT ones would fit.
Second point are the problems with them (steering rod etc.).
But I will change for the TT arms in a few months after testing the actual setup.
And if the probs with the TT hubs are solved I'd like to go for them.
No question about the advantages of both TT arms and TT hubs. The TT arms
fit easily, but some report about probs with the TT hubs.
-
What problems with TT hubs? Can you point me where it was mentioned? Thanks.

I'm very happy with the Whiteline ALK. The improvement in traction is really amazing. :happy2:
Unfortunately the rear dampers of my Sachs coilover don't allow for adjustment after winter.
I will send them to Sachs to check them. :sad1:
Don't have new pics, so there are just some old ones:

The car is looking great with the 18 inch BBS wheels. :happy2:
-
I'm going to run the BBS with track tyres next year and the 17" stock for winter. :driver:
Sadly I have very few pics of my car with the BBS and all of the tanke with my phone. :ashamed:
-
I think it is a great idea to switch the rims. The tire offer for slicks/semislicks is greater for 18 than it is for 17 inches.
-
Yes, and the wheels are 1/2 an inch wider and not heavier than my 17" Monzas.
-
About rim width, it all depend what tire you are using.
The friend with the 500+ bhp S3 has 205mm wide rally slicks. So, for him, 8 inches rim width is worse than 7.5 inches (as he has on his OEM rims).
Also for 17 inches, 7.5 is ideal for tires like R888 and Kumho v70A (225mm wide), while BFGoodridge say 8 inches rim width is ideal for their 225mm wide tires.
For 18 inch rims most manufacturers say that 8 inches is the ideal width for 225mm wide tires. BUT there are slicks that are 205/215 mm wide which need some thinner rims :happy2:.
So it all depends on your tire choise... :drinking:
-
Right, most manufacturers recommend 8x18 for 225/40 R18 and
they allow this rim size for 235/40 R18 as well.
I would love to go for 235s but I know I'd better have ET50 then.
Unfortunately my BBS have ET44.
Keep in mind I will also go for TT arms.
-
Had the adjustment of my rear dampers failing after winter.
Fortunately got completely new dampers from Sachs Race Engineering:
THX to SACHS, good service !! :happy2:

They look the dogs, very nice kit
-
Karsten and me will fit them tomorrow. :happy2:
-
They are in place.
We did an adjustment as well. As the steering wasn't centered
and I'd like to have more toe in we did this by ourselves in two
very small steps (marked positions). Already just had very little
toe in (a few minutes).
Now: steering wheel centered, improoved steering feel and much
better turn in !! :driver:
Will probably verify the toe in soon though.
:happy2:

What is your current toe in value?
Cheers :happy2:
-
I still have to do it myself (string method) or let it have done in the shop.
Will probably verify the toe in soon though.
If I'd have to bet: +15'

Oh... and I have just noticed... is your front valance painted?
If it is why didn't you paint the side skirts and the rear valance as well? :drinking:

My favourites as well, Mike !!
Early August sounds good.
Splitter ist painted (cos it needs to be painted), side skirts are still matt black.
I like them this way.

How wide are those rear tyres Bruce!!
They look like porsche wheels! :scared:

Just 8x19 ET45 + 225/35.
We did these pics last autumn.

So in a few weeks I'm going to have my brake system looking like this:
- Tarox F2000 on front (still 312x25)
- Ferodo DS Performance*
- bronze bushes für FN3 calipers
- RS3 vent
- open fog grills with hose to the wheel
- removed backing plates
- on rear disc and pad remain stock (286x12; Ferodo)
* next year Pagid RS4-2, PFC97 or even Endless MX72
-
Nice... I like your plans! Good luck!
Is the battery powerful enough for day to day use? Which model is it?
And please make photos when you do this (this is also on my agenda):
- open fog grills with hose to the wheel
-
Very Very nice plans !
What is the weight of the battery?
-
5kg, oem is around 19 20kg ;)
-
How is the RS3 vent? Where will it be placed on the car?
-
Braille B14115
Yes, 5.2 kg instead of ~19 kg.
Hope it gets the engine started but have put a set of cables into the car to be safe.
Cranking amps is almost as good as a large standard battery.
The RS3/TT-RS brake vent elements fit plug & play to the (alloy) S3/RS3 arms.
After reading Wolf-Heinrich Hucho's Book I hope to have some basic knowledge about
the airflow under the car and now these elements seem pretty well designed to me.
-
Hmm, wonder if they fit to the alloy cupra arms.
So long as you pay attention to not leaving xenons or loud music on without the engine running the battery will be fine :)
-
I'm optimistic to get the engine started.
I keep off leaving home/coming home lights (except mirrors which I don't know how to switch off)
and I never use radio when engine turned off.
-
My new stereo is on permanent live at the min when i get round to giving a switched live i think the battery will last even longer.
-
The weight saved with this new battery is monumental! This is a great mod and I think it goes better with a Carbon Hood (too bad VWR are not making it anymore). BTW... any plans with some carbon hood/fenders? :drinking:
-
Unfortunately last year I did not buy an original VW Motorsport carbon hood
(the one with the vents you know from Volkswagen's own 24h GTI).
These where made by Becker Carbon in Germany and also sold by Bildon Parts
in the USA.
What I didn't like: the visible vents. So the carbon hood is visible to everyone
and carbon hoods are hard to legalize in Germany (crash behaviour).
I'm still looking for road legal OEM quality hood. I won't go for different fenders
for weight saving as the steel fenders are light as well. But wider plastic ones
provide the nevessary space to fit 235 mm Direzzas + TT arms and hubs.
In short: no decision made.
-
Yup... I know the hood you mean... I ruled it out for me because of 2 reasons: (1) the vents are right on top of the turbocharger and I am afraid it might get wet (and I don't think cold rain coming down on a hot turbo is the way to go) and (2) the weight save is minimal (as I know the hood weighs 11 kg compared to 15 the the original one and 5 kg to the VWR hood). I like the Bildon Rear Wing though.... This has been on my shopping list for some time but there was always something else to do...
Fancy a Kesrscher fenders group buy (I HAVE to change the fenders before coming to the Ring next year)?

I'm in on the fender groupbuy Rex :drinking:

Rex, do you read German? On Golf5GTI.com there's some information on
both SRS Tec- and Kerscher fenders.
Jake, thought you have Seibon fenders?

Jake, thought you have Seibon fenders?
I have, but left one is splintered where it's joined with the fender due to running low with 8,5x19 and 235 tyres along with TT lower control arms. at the same side there's also a soft dent which i presume must be due to stress in the material from when it's made. The TT lower control arms negates the extra 10mm wider fenders so i could use some more room
-
Rex, do you read German? On Golf5GTI.com there's some information on
both SRS Tec- and Kerscher fenders.
My German is very bad because of the lack of practicing (I haven't spoken German in 10 years).
I know the SRS Tec fender, but I think I will buy the Kerscher one for the following reasons:
(1) TEFF has a Kersche wing. I saw it and it has a great finish. The fender is really nicely build and comes along with the car. It really looks OEM but a bit wider (exactly the look and functionality I am looking for).
(2) I don't know first hand how the SRS fender is.
(3) the pictures on the SRS web site is with a modified front bumper. So I can't say if the SRS fender comes along with the OEM front bumper.
The way I am thinking right now is that I am better of buying the Kerscher fenders for 650 EURO and take no risks than buy the 450 EURO SRS fenders and hope they would fit ok. 200 EURO is quite a lot, but I am more afraid of loosing 450 EURO than 200 EURO.
-
I'd prefer Kerscher as well. They do fine quality for decades. Who is SRS Tec?
Yes, I remember the Seibon had poor quality when you were fitting them.
So Kerscher again.

:happy2: I'm getting mine refurbished at A1 in the next few weeks hopefully!
I'm gonna get em done with the Black inserts, instead of the original grey colour though.
Have yours got the grey inserts too Bruce???
-
Yes, grey inserts as well and unfortunately two have to be also refurbished.
When I changed wheels I was bit clumsy and two wheels fallen on their face.
:jumping:
-
Ouch :(
-
Not easily visible. One happened last year, the other this year.
I laquered them instantly for protection against moisture.
This one more argument to fit 235 mm wide tyres on an 8" rim
(the other is grip). The point is I had to know it better before...
-
Fitted the battery yesterday.
Have built a mount with two threads and one alloy bar.
Had to take the stock mounting plate out to fit the nuts
to the underside.
Engine starts like with the OEM battery. Hope it does
at -10° C.
Sadly it was too dark for a proper shot.
-
:happy2: I haven't had the tomika on the ctek charger while I've been using the car daily and starts normal so far as low 1 - 2degrees.
-
I guess if you take little care of ''electricity management'' even a proper 15 Ah
will do it's job. If the Tomika is larger the better.
No listening music for an hour, no lights on while engine isn't running of course.
Any link to Tomika? I haven't ever heard of them.

Tarox F2000 front brake discs + caliper stiffening kit

Nice!
How much do the discs weigh?

Holger,
Ordered your bits today :happy2:

:happy2: :happy2: :happy2:
8 kg

Fitted the brake stiffening bushes and the RS3 vents:
first get the old rubber out:

A - still one rubber
B - removed rubber (C)
then little grinding to remove rust (and after this protect the surface with antiseize):

both bronze bushes in place:

After one week or so I will be able to report how the brake feels.
As I had things apart I fitted the RS3 as well:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.golf5gti.com%2Fupload%2Favatars%2Futool_f_1323471176_3041.jpg&hash=5aa41ebda617b4fac47b3a219c993b9738528603)
Removed the guards also. Hell the caliper mounts were hard to loosen !!
(needed to unbolt them to remove the splash guard - these have to be
tightened with 190 Nm)
-
This is a very nice golf, tasteful mods :happy2:
Never knew monzas came in 19"
-
Volkswagen never made the GTI with them. These Monzas are Italian
made replicas (8x19 45) and very popular in Germany.
I will sell them though. They look stunning, but they are quite heavy.
-
Nice one bruce!
One question: are the brake good enough for circuit use (I had GTI brakes and they seemed a little bit too small and I have less bhp and kg than you)?
-
Too small for GP circuits, but I hope strong enough for
autocross and Nordschleife.
With a set of RS4-2, RS19, PFC01, PFC97 or MX-72 it
should perform quite sufficient.
Furthermore I don't feel I am good enough to brake
Ring records. I don't have much routine on the Ring.

-
I have RS 4-2 on my AP Racing PRO 5000+ and they are quiet and have very good initial bite (even at -5deg) but while hard braking they are far from the Carbotechs I had on my S3/R32 brakes. Even Pagid says they are better suited for use on rear brakes to complement RS19 or 29 on the front brakes. RS19 and 29 are endurance pads with medium friction, much better than 4-2 but still weaker than Carbotech. However, I've heard a set of RS29 while very expensive, lasted an entire 24h race on very powerfull racecars (like DTM or lemans) so on our cars they should do for like 10 trackdays wich is 2-3 times more than Carbotech. The RS14 & 15 are Pagid's highest friction compounds to be used where high disc temps are expected or one needs very high brake torque
Some friction comparison :
http://www.pagid-brake-pads.co.uk/material-specifications.php
-
Too bad the RS29 are ~350 Pounds for the GTI caliper. :sad1:
-
I tend to get the Pagid Blue (< 200,-- €) or the Endless (~ 350,-- €)
and I will further improve ventilation before any trackday.

Of course I will.
No p&p indeed. I found some pics from someone who glued ducts behind
the open GTI fog grills and fitted a hose. I will do something similar.
You could fit some fog light grills to your GT and fit a hose as well. The only
difficult question is how to fit the hose to the brake/hub assembly.
Isa-Racing sell a aluminium duct, but it doesent fit the Golf hubs p&p and it
is quite expensive.

old shape springs:

You can clearly see the narrow first two or three and the last two windings which caused
the clapping noise on bumps at low speeds. There is much more space between these
windings on the new changed spring.
TT strut mounts (two teeth), also used in Leon Cupra, Audi RS3 and A3 convertible:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.golf5gti.com%2Fupload%2Favatars%2Futool_f_1327324296_3041.jpg&hash=be8ea466da19cdcbcca4b39ad6904331d0280da2)
First, the clapping noise is gone. The new springs are slightly stiffer as well. Front and rear
feel more balanced. Hard to say what the amount the strut mounts do as I changed both
at the same time. Fact is the steering feels more crisp and handling shows quicker turn in.
At the moment I run 18" winter and soft ARB settings (dampers soft to medium) - same as
before of course.
All in all: more fun and less noise. :happy2:

Great bruce. I also felt an improvement in damping and steering response when I replaced my B16 sagged springs with same springs but new !
-
I remember when you were driving a Golf with the Sachs coilover you
haven't been happy with them. You should give it a try again if you have
the chance (with the newer spring type, ARBs etc.).
I guess there's no need to set the front ARB to full stiff anymore. When
I change tyres I will just set the rear ARB to stiff and leave the front bar
on soft.
I must say I don't want the suspension any stiffer than this. Maybe I'm
not tough enough, but I can't stand any more on a daily driver.
-
Well, I had the sways and no TT arms so the wheels were perfectly aligned with the fender, not 8-10mm out like now. It felt strange to set the suspension at 15/20 stiffness and the highest position and still get fender rub on all corners. I mean, there was nothing more to adjust on that coilover in order to avoid the poke ! The car had about 10mm lower ride height than with the B16 set at medium height !!!

Curious. On all pics in this thread height is adjusted on front not at limit.
On front there has been ~10 mm left and on rear at least 25 mm.
Now I did not adjust anything and the front is raised at least by 10 mm.
(wheel center to arch 338 + 335 and now ~ 348 + 335 mm)
The new springs are some millimeters longer and noticeably stiffer.
Of course I'm below 1400 kg - no DSG, no 4-dr, not fully loaded at all.
Rex, there might be slight differences depending on which make the
mounts are. I went for genuine Volkswagen parts which I had the chance

Nice photos and good news about the brakes (but Nurburgring is not exactly a demanding circuit brake-wise).

I know, Rex. Guess I'd have cooked my brakes on the Hungaroring as well.
I also had some issues: no grip (I was on Conti SC3) and some rubbing. :jumping:
No good idea to run 8x19 ET45 on the Ring. :fighting:

Nice to hear to went for a MRS. :happy2: Are you happy with it?
I was on the Nordschleife on 18.3. and 25.3. . It would be great to meet you there.
Sadly at the moment I can not tell you when I will be able to visit the Ring again.
-
The Mégane is a good car, fast out of the box but I miss my A3.
I was at the Ring the 10/03 & 11/03 and will be there 6/04, 07/03, 08/03, and 9/03.
-
You should join www.touristenfahrerforum.de if you understand some German. :happy2:
I will see when I will be there again.
-
Well, thanks for the link but despite I plan to move to Germany (We are buying a flat in Köln) my German is very poor.
I won't say much than:
Ich heisse Laurent.
Wie geht es dir? :popcornsoda:
kann ich noch ein bier haben bitteschön? :drinking:
Du bist eine schön fräulein.
Sometime it could be enough, but unfortunatly most of the time it isn't. :signLOL:
-
If you move to Cologne learning some German might be a good idea, Laurent.
Nice city though. Hope we meet each other.
:drinking:
ps:
'Fräulein' is a very old fashioned word. Foreigners may call a girl 'Fräulein', but a
German wouldn't do that in 2012. :signLOL:

Reply#8, Alex reccommends an OEM nut for the bumpsteer kit :happy2:
Lets us know about the sway bar links, very interested as it's on my list :innocent:
-
:happy2:
Thank you Freddy. I made a comment on this.

Review!
-
Guess after fitting the adjustable sway bar links one should have cross weight aligned (again).
-
do you have the whiteline arbs Holger?
-
Thanks for updating the thread :happy2:
Do you have a part number for the other nut required for the lower ball joint
as i didn't know about this one either :ashamed:
I have to replace my TT ball joints anyway as the rubber boots are split :sad1:
May aswell get it all done together

Its an audi part, just a shouldered Hex nut. Ill dig out the pn. unles vRsalex is along 1st
-
I don't have the parts numbers anymore, but I remember the other collar nut
had the exactly same size, just another color (different anti corrosion coating).
Mike, watch my sig !! I guess the larger the bars and the harder you
corner the more you need uprated end links.
:drinking:
-
I wondered what brand of ARB thats all :happy2:
-
H&R - from what I know they are the only who do a 28/24 kit. Thought you know it.
I like this combo together with the Sachs and my stock 200 horses. For those running
300+ BHP (you, Mike !!) 24/24 ARBs might be the better choice.

very nice car man.
-
@ Bruce:
I've been reading what you posted on the Mk5 forum across the pond: Extremely impressed by your aerodynamics knowledge :notworthy: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:
-
Thanks, mates !!
Robin, I'm no professional on this, but have been interested in this stuff for
many years and read some books about aerodynamics. This way even a
naturally mildly talented guy like me will get some basic knowledge.
-
^^^^
Your American forum discussion with another couple of guys who know about aerodynamics certainly brought out some more knowledge even though it did get a bit technical in parts. The Golf just isn't fast enough or the right shape for aerodynamics to make massive differences but every little bit helps and the principles are interesting.
-
The Golf is somehow like a Lego piece, but cutting 2 or 3 per cent of drag is quite easy
and even 5 per cent is no big deal.
-
Great pic Bruce :congrats:

nice pic that
-
Holger, what is the reason for the golf 6 windscreen?
-
Improved acoustic isolation. Never fitted this, but I remember a guy did.
The black printing is little different, but the shape of the windscreen itself
is the same as Mk.V.
Reduced wind noise, less "FSI ticker" (midrange frequencies). No difference
in exhaust noise.
