Removing the side skirts (sill extensions)
« on: February 18, 2009, 05:44:23 pm »
I have this guide:

–   Remove bolts -2-.
–   Before removing, heat sill extension -1- in bonding surface area -4- with hot air blower -V.A.G 1416-.
–   Loosen adhesive tape -4-, by carefully inserting a plastic wedge -5- between sill -3- and sill extension -1-.
–   As soon as adhesive tape comes loose, lift sill extension -1- up -arrow- out of retaining strip.

Has anyone actually done it though? did you manage to get the skirts off intact and in one piece?

A hair dryer and patients my boy. You would really have to yank at them to split the plastic.  :innocent:

reckon if you put the car in a warm garage thatll make a big difference  :happy2:
You could in theory use some alcohol (non paint effecting) and use a dropper into the join to soften it before attempting the job?

I did it on my GTI, they are a piece of cake, apart from if when they were installed they used a big blob of contact adhesive on the rear part of the skirt, you may be lucky but possibly not..

Thanks for this guide mate, just did mine in under half an hour.  That including a 10 minute conversation with a lad that has a MK4 and offered to buy mine, and an argument with one of the neighbours because we were talking outside his house!

I didn't apply any heat though, what I did was start from the back, then used a CD wrapped in stockinette to break the seal.  No marks on skirts or car, and both skirts are in one piece.   That said, I was one of the lucky ones, there was no contact adhesive in sight.

Right, time for lunch!
