MK5 Golf GTI

No mate not a Leon. It was a mk4 1.8T GTI. Vowed I would never buy anything off them after that!

Hope you do get it sorted but my guess is it could be both the mech unit and the clutch packs. Hopefully for your sake it's just the one though!

Have a look through this. It's not clutch pack related but the guys who sorted mine really knew their stuff so It might be worth giving them a call even if it's just for advice.

Hope you get it sorted!

I remember reading that, ill give them a bell, cheers.

Hi guys - It's been a year of happy motoring since my DSG woes. I bought my '08 Mk5 GTI from a local garage and had exactly the same problems with jerky 1st and reverse - made the car undriveable. After taking it back to the dealer, who was helpful, and then several garages, no-one seemed to know what the issue was (suggested oil changes, clutch packs etc). I wasn't convinced as everyone gave a different answer.

Luckily I stumbled across Slater's garage in Nottingham on t'internet. They were very helpful on the phone and are extremely knowledgable about DSG transmissions - more so than VW. They are really enthusiastic about the DSG gearboxes and love taking them apart. My problem was with the Mechatronic unit, despite all diagnostics being normal. I've done 10,000 miles since and the gearbox has not skipped a shift or given me any problems. Luckily my repairs were covered under the warranty I was given with the car.

If you need an answer as to what the problem really is then I would highly recommend these guys in Nottingham. It was over 2 hours away from me, but well worth the excellent service. These guys are absolutely great.

Hi Andy,
I am experiencing the exact same issues with my Passat R36 and having put it into the VW specialist he confirmed that there were no fault codes stored in the car ECUs. Initially I have also been under the assumption the problem is due to the mechatronics unit but considering most mechatronic unit failures come hand in hand with limp mode and gearbox lights flashing on dash, I am now starting to think it might be the clutch pack. Did you ever get your situation resolved and if so, what was the problem in the end? Any help appreciated, cheers!
Ollie

Sorry about the late reply haven't been using this site as much.

No, I haven't had mine sorted yet, mite more of an inconvenience than a problem for me.
I intend to take it to the guys suggested above to get it sorted next year. I just about finished an apprenticeship so I'll have the money available in the new year.

I have the exact same problem. warranty company are trying to argue and say its the clutch pack which am not coverd for.

Been getting messed about from a few places. phoned slaters in nottingham and they said they think its the mechatronics valve bodys i think they said.

So its going in to slaters tomorrow so see what they say and hopfully get it fixed. will report back with what happens.

If they confirm it's the mech, give the warranty company a call when you are there, get them to speak to the mechanic there and then, happy days :)

They always try and wriggle out of these things... I like the way the warranty company can say it's the clutch pack without even looking at the car

When I blew the box on an overly tuned SAAB 9-5 they tried to get the mechanic (a mate) to agree that there was a possibility that low oil could've killed the box, crafty barstewardss, he just said no, oil level was fine and they paid out.

yeah slaters have said they will ring them. i also told them aswell so they are sending another engineer out. first engineer thought dsg fart was rumbling from the gearbox which made him think it was clutch pack haha.

They wanted me to take it to a different garage that they deal with. maybe one that has agreed to say its the clutch pack who knows lol. but i decided to go to slaters instead as they seemed to know alot more on the phone than the other place.

Yeah they have been passing me about for months. i hope i never need to deal with them again.

so finally warranty direct have autorised my claim. new mechatronics to be fitted.

Happy with that. finally after months of being passed about its done.

Slaters in nottingham have been fantastic and i would highly recommend.

I had mine replaced last year through warranty direct also, bit of a farce all the same

Hi Andy, we've messaged a year ago regarding my woes with first gear and reverse gear jerking. I found my lower mount and gearbox mount at fault and after replacing these the cars spot on

I wonder how many people with similar symptoms have ended up having their mechatronics replaced when they could have just done this?

I seriously think quite a lot as Alan Day vw couldn't even find the damaged mounts  idiots.

Sorry mate don't really use this to much anymore.

How did you find out it was the mounts? We're your symptoms only when hot aswell?

If it was the mounts if presume it would be constant.

I just decided enough was enough and removed the engine cover and rocked the engine back and forth and found it had excess play. bought a mount and took the old one off and took a video of how bad it really was. It happened mainly once warm ad the colder it was the stiffer it was and less it moved.
Check the video half way down. lower mount was checked whilst on a ramp and bushes were torn.
